Before she was simply known as just Bjork she was the lead singer of the Icelandic pop group Sugarcubes. For the first time ever, video hits from Sugarcubes are available on DVD. Sugarcubes The DVD features 9 of the groups videos and three bonus videos that are considered extras.

While Bjork is known for her cutting edge big budget videos (Oh So Quiet, Human Behavior), the Sugarcube videos are entertaining but not so over the top. The videos for the songs "Regina" and "Planet" are close to what Bjork videos would evolve into. "Eat The Menu" is a live performance/club video. It's a really cool video (and song) that almost is reminiscent of early stuff by The B52's. The DVD also includes two versions of the song "Birthday," an Icelandic version and an English version.

I was around when the Sugarcubes were out. I guess they were considered alternative or underground to a degree in the U.S. because I don't remember seeing many of these videos the first time around. I remember seeing the video for the song "Regina" on the old MTV alternative show "120 Minutes." Its nice to have all of the videos in one collection.

Ever since I discovered Bjork and The Sugarcubes I've eagerly waited for the day when a Sugarcubes DVD would release in the USA. Finally it's here...all I can really say about this release is that it gives me chills. These music videos aren't big budget productions and professionally filmed like all of Bjork's music videos as a solo artists. In fact, half of them look as if they were filmed by an amateur. But don't let that fool you...these music videos not only exemplify Bjork's magnetic personality, beauty, and talent long before she was a solo artist, but the creativity and spontaneous personalities of the Sugarcubes. Although their career as a band was short lived, they truly followed the beat of their own drum. They were a band who made their own style, defined their own music, and created and explored it in a way that was raw, pure, and free. Also, for me I think the greatest charm of this DVD was to finally see the faces of the people that made up The Sugarcubes (other than Bjork of course). These people were unique individuals, and it shows in their facial expressions and the way they dressed, looked, and yes, even in the way they sang in English and Icelandic. I believe that was what made them such an international success: they broke barriers, they were spontaneous, they were daring, and most importantly of all, they were originals. If you are a major Bjork or Sugarcubes fan, I'd recommend this DVD. It's truly a wonderful treat for those who embrace the creativity and just the good fun that The Sugarcubes gave to us in such a short, and yet fulfilling career.

Only two reviews for the Sugarcubes on DVD? Are all of us older KUKL/ Sugarcube fans dead and gone? Absent minded or gone senile? I waited a decade plus to see these videos again and delight they did. This is a no frills but professionaly grouped together batch of those long lost treasures. Much better than those grainy and blurry boots that circulated the darkside of the market. Okay, One Little Indian does throw in a few live shot videos, but after all those years I wished for a bit more. Of course Bjork would leave her "little" punk and pop bands behind only to reinvent modern music.
