I'm a sugar addict!,
By Chuck Passaglia (Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
I just read Sugarettes by Dr. Scott Olson and I liked the book for two reasons. First, Sugarettes helped me identify and start to address my sugar addiction. Yes, I am a lifelong sugar addict: From fruit juice as a baby, to Frosted Flakes as a young man, to anything sweet goes as an adult. Sugarettes is a quick read and, thankfully for the non-medical reader, keeps scientific information at a coherent level of understanding. Second, and maybe more importantly, I think Dr. Olson is on to something more with Sugarettes. Dr. Olson highlights the glaring silence by government regulators and health care associations regarding sugar abuse in our society. I find it odd, in a society that longs for days gone by and the lessons of the "greatest generation," that we haven't explored our risky, unconstrained love affair with sugar and sugar substitutes. Reading Sugarettes, I'm left to wonder whether all unhealthy roads lead to sugar.

Great motivational read,
By Scott Nesbett "Scott" (Centennial, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
I like to read motivational books on eating healthy and was lucky enough to get this book. Dr. Olson's style of writing kept me captive as I sat and drank my coffee (with sugar.) After finishing the book instead of feeling guilty about eating sugar, I find I'm more "aware" of when I consume it. I think Dr. Olson is surely on to something when he writes about the fact that there are no "real" or "official" studies that link sugar to obesity or diabetes...similar to smoking vs. cancer (in the 50's and 60's.)
Having a grandmother who had diabetes and required insulin shots every day, I never knew what it was actually doing for her. This book cleared that up for me and explained it in such a way I actually understood without having to re-read that chapter again...meaning it was written with language I (and most non-scientists) could understand. I'm glad I read this...and it sticks in the back of my mind when my grocery cart starts gravitating toward high-glycemic foods in the store. Great motivation for anyone who is trying to eat a more healthy diet.

Reading this makes it easier to quit sugar,
By
This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
I was shocked to learn so many things in this book but, I think the most surprising is how fast sugar adds up and how damaging it is. Dr. Olson made it easy to understand and fun and different to read. It really helps saying no to the kids when I know what's happening when they eat sugar! Thanks, Dr. Olson!

Great book on type II diabetes,

I have found "Sugarettes", by Dr. Scott Olsen, to be a great read for anyone who is interested in how sugar works in your body, and more importantly, why you cannot stop eating it. I am an acupuncturist and addiction specialist and this book is the best book I have found to help my patients understand why sugar is so hard to stop eating, and why it is so important to your health to reduce how much you eat. I recommend this book to all of my type II diabetes patients, and to any patient who is trying to lose weight, but has a problem with sugar cravings. The feedback that I have gotten from my patients has been great. I commend Dr. Olsen for having the stones to stand up to this huge industry that has somehow controlled the research to continue selling their goods.

Sugar (Carb) Addiction Is As Bad As Nicotine, Heroin, And Crack Cocaine!,
By Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Man "Jimmy Moore" (Spartanburg, SC) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
What if we started treating sugar addiction like we do nicotine, heroin or crack cocaine addiction? Do you think it would change our perspective about how we view it? You bet it would which was the intention of the author and naturopathic physician Dr. Scott Olson when he wrote the book. Making the case that sugar is as harmful to public health as any drug out there today, Olson outlines all the ins and outs of this issue to help sugar addicts overcome their problem.
Much of his advice focuses on cutting out not just the sugars that you consume, but also anything that would turn to sugar in the body. In other words, starchy carbohydrates are considered sugar by his definition as well. This is a perfect read for anyone who is following a controlled-carb nutritional approach and needs an extra boost of support in overcoming the need for sugar in their lives forever.

A "Must Read" for everyone!,
By
This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
This book is about the fact that we are all addicted to sugar. Sugar is in practically everything we eat. The average person eats about 1/2 a pound of sugar a day!!! No wonder why it's so hard to to just eat one cookie or one donut. And why there is such a rise in the amount of people in the U.S. who battle diabetes, obesity, heart disease... The book was an easy reader. I learned so much from it. I've greatly reduced the amount of sugar I consume on a daily basis and I've started loosing weight. I also purchased the book "Crave". It's another excellent book.

Gives you a New Perspective.,

This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
As someone who has an addiction to sugar and it affects my health greatly, this book is a wealth of information. It gives much insight, education and ideas for trying to become a healthier person. I have struggled with many health issues for many years. One of them...Fibromyalgia. I believe sugar addiction is a major cause of fatigue and ongoing issues with hypoglycemia. I would recommend this book to anyone who might be struggling with the same issues and is looking to feel & be healthier. I would also recommend it just for the education behind the sugar addiction epidemic, that is happening in our country!

Simplified, step-by-step explanation of the role sugar plays in disease,
By
This review is from: Sugarettes (Paperback)
Sugar is ubiquitous in today's diet whereas centuries past it was considered a rare treat for the wealthy. Our grandparents ate very little sugar, but today our bodies are bombarded by sugar and foods that act like sugar. The average American consumes one half pound of sugar per day. The National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition boards suggest that no more than 25 percent(!) of total calories should come from added sugars. This sounds reasonable until you realize that nowhere in nature would mankind be able to find and consume this amount of sugar. Evolution did not equip our bodies to handle so much, and we pay the price for this excess in ill health. Dr. Olson writes: "Have you ever wondered why so many foods contain sugar? Addiction is a powerful way to sell a product. Cigarette manufacturers have proven this is a strategy that works. But while cigarette companies have been held responsible for adding addictive substances to their cigarettes to ensure that you are a customer for life, food companies have been doing the same thing for decades and getting away with it." Dr. Olson provides the reader with a step-by-step explanation of sugar's history, how it is metabolized, its addictive properties, how it harms tissues and organs causing obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and kidney disease and how to cut sugar from your diet. Sugarettes avoids complex biology and presents the information so that even young teenagers can understand it. This book is perfect for those beginning their journey into nutrition and is especially important for those diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes. When it comes to your diet, don't make the mistake of listening to the USDA or the American Diabetic Association. Instead, read Sugarettes. Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher.

I was rapidly gaining weight, over 100 kgs (220 lbs) in my early 30s, and my health was falling to pieces. Asthma, ulcerative colitis, anxiety and depression bad enough to trigger multiple suicide attempts, and severe back pain. I ended up on a disability pension, unsure how I would ever get my health back.I put into practice Scott Olson's recommendations, and cut out all added sugars, as well as all grains and starchy vegetables, and the weight started falling off. I wasn't perfect, I went back to eating these foods and saw for myself how they stimulated hunger and caused weight gain. I'm down to 73 kgs now (about 160 lbs) and am starting to feel a lot better. Do his 30 day challenge and see for yourself how right he is about carbohydrates and sugars.....

This book should be required reading for every doctor, med student, and teacher. In layman's terms, Olson does an excellent job of explaining the diabetes epidemic wreaking havoc on my family and friends. He traces the history of sugar and how it evolved from a luxury to a common food additive. I have read a number of books on this subject...this book convinced me to change the course of my life. I will be purchasing additional copies for family and friends. I have purchased more than one hundred books on Amazon...this is my first review!
