4.0 out of 5 stars first LP in a line of albums that get better and better
when i first bought this album i was a little bummed out. being a non conventional record buyer, i buy things in non-sequential order, meaning i got the last two sugarman 3 before their first. the last two albums to me are a fantastic example of what Daptone and co. have to offer. so the first couple times listening i neglected the fact this is a band thats classic and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great band, okay CD
If you are a fan of funk "revival," you can't do much better than the Sugarman Three. They are super-funky, and very authentic. This CD however, is only okay. First of all, it could be longer. Some of their covers sound unimaginative, especially "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." There are some strong songs and moments here, but I definitely prefer their CD, "Pure Cane...

when i first bought this album i was a little bummed out. being a non conventional record buyer, i buy things in non-sequential order, meaning i got the last two sugarman 3 before their first. the last two albums to me are a fantastic example of what Daptone and co. have to offer. so the first couple times listening i neglected the fact this is a band thats classic and their capturing that classic soul-jazz sound, almost comparatively to lou donaldson, or brother jack mcduff. this album really grew on me, and i figured id try to see what other though, and all i heard was that it sounded like "elevator" music. so to the listener who isnt familiar to the roots of this album, maybe wont enjoy this. If you dont want to have to do alittle research before buying this CD or LP, id suggest working your way backwards, and hopefully youll wanna hear where these artist started off. or just skip it and go directly in an opposite direction to Budos Band I. absolutely no disappointments whatsoever there. The Budos Band
