About the Author

Susan P. Baker brings her experience as a Texas district court judge, practicing attorney, and probation officer to her books, each of which has a legal angle a bit different from the last. Her previous works are the Mavis Davis novels, My First Murder and The Sweet Scent of Murder about a former probation officer/child abuse investigator who opens her own private investigation firm. Her third novel, Death of a Prince, is a mystery set in her hometown of Galveston. The protagonists are mother and daughter criminal defense lawyers defending the daughter of another lawyer for his murder. Her nonfiction works are Murdered Judges of the 20th Century, true stories, which she researched and wrote over a six-year period. Lastly, because the heartbreak of divorce was something she witnessed every day from the bench, she wrote a small book advising both pro se litigants and others involved in the family court system on how to move through the courts with as little misery as possible. Heart of Divorce-Advice from a Judge first came out in 2004 but is as timely now as then. Susan is the past head of the Southwest Chapter of Mystery Writers of America, a member of Sisters in Crime, Authors Guild, Writers League of Texas, Romance Writers of America, and Galveston Novel and Short Story Writers. She is married, the mother of two children, and lives in Texas and Mexico with her husband.

More About the Author

Susan P. Baker is the author of five novels and two nonfiction books, all of which have a legal bent due to her career in the justice system. A retired Texas judge from Galveston, for twelve years Susan heard family violence, child abuse, juvenile delinquency (including murder), child custody battles, and other family cases. She also practiced law for nine years spending much of her time in the courtroom in the trial of criminal and family cases. During law school, she worked as a probation officer in which her worst experiences, besides driving on I45 from Galveston to Houston for classes several times a week, were making home visits to some scary neighborhoods.

Her father was a lawyer and a judge. She remembers him parking the family outside the old county jail while he went in and made a bail bond. She'd stare out the back window of the car at the broken glass that lined the walls of the yard to prevent escapes and wonder what it was like inside. Later she became quite familiar with the inside of the jail but luckily she could leave whenever she wanted.

Susan is a member of Women Fiction Writers Association, Authors Guild, Sisters in Crime, Galveston Novel and Short Story Writers, and San Miguel Literary Society.

She is married, has two children, eight grandchildren, and lives with her husband in Mexico. She loves dark chocolate, especially with raspberries, and traveling around the world. An anglophile, her favorite country is England where she likes to visit relatives--her mother was a British war bride--Roman ruins, anything Shakespeare, and just about everything else she comes across.

As a Lawyer, you would think I'd get enough of legal drama in my real world adventures but I love Murder Mysteries and this book was a great read. The characters came alive through Judge Baker's use of dialogue and just enough legalese to make you aware of the court system. It was quick paced but kept my attention to the very end. I highly recommend it to everyone. I think even my lawyer friends will like it. Sure hope I never run across this situation in real life but there are some evil people in this world with a misguided sense of justice. Check it out for yourself.

Enjoyed Suggestion of Death, It kept me guessing right to the end about the wife! It was good to see something written about the child support system from a father’s perspective. I know there must be a lot of dead beat dads out there but I am sure there are many more just trying to do the right thing for their children after a divorce and having a struggle doing it.

I was already a Susan P Baker fan having enjoyed her other works of fiction, Death of a Prince, My First Murder and the Sweet Scent of Murder. I also read her book Murdered Judges and was horrified by how dangerous being a judge can be! Keep up the good work Judge Baker, each of your works is better than the last! I am a fan.

I could not put this book down for wanting to know "whodunit." This book is a great and quick read with realistic characters and situations. It really made me think deeply about what men must go through in divorces with custody and child support issues.

Suggestion of Death doesn't mean the judge has sentenced you to die, but in Susan Baker's mystery it might be, if you've been identified as a Deadbeat Dad. As fellow dads, drop around him, Jim Dorman turns his newspaper skills to investigating the circumstances. At first all he wants to do is get a job, pay his legal debts and hook up with his ex-wife, a petite blonde to die for. Well, that's what Jim doesn't want to do. Soon evidence points in a direction he fins unacceptable but years of journalism has taught him to look at the facts, and he doesn't like what he sees.

But, you will like what you read. Susan Baker is a seasoned judge and she takes you behind the scenes of domestic court.
