Sugru SMLT8 Hardware Sealer

What is sugru?

sugru is the exciting new self-setting rubber that can be formed by hand. It moulds like play-dough, bonds to almost anything and turns into a strong, flexible silicone rubber overnight. Developed by a team of product designers and material scientists, sugru's patented technology is unique in its combination of hand-formability, self-adhesion and flexibility when cured. It feels like modelling clay, and it's that easy to use too. Once cured, its durable properties mean it's comfortable in extreme environments from the dishwasher to the ocean in Antarctica.

Why is the multi-color pack right for me?

The sugru - Multi Color (Pack of 8) gives you 8 foil-wrapped pieces of sugru ready for 8 fixing sessions around the house, car, garden, kid’s playroom or just about anywhere really. You get 2 pieces of red, yellow and blue sugru, and one each of black and white - perfect to colour blend for invisible fixes around the home, or adding colourful improvements to personal items.

How do I use sugru?

sugru can be mixed together to make any colour you like! sugru is hand formable and can be moulded and shaped by hand for up to 30 minutes once it has been removed from its air-tight packaging. sugru sticks to almost anything - in fact it was designed to stick to as many other materials as possible. It forms a strong bond to aluminium, steel, ceramics, glass, wood and other materials including some plastics like perspex and ABS and rubbers like silicone and butyl rubber. sugru feels like modelling clay when you take it from its pack but once it's exposed to air, it cures to a tough flexible silicone overnight. Working time = 30 mins. Cure time = 24hrs (0.2 inch deep).

What can I use sugru for?

When sugru cures, it's flexible rather than rigid which means that you can repair things that need to be able to move like textiles, cables, or shoes. It's also electrically insulating - how awesome is that? sugru is strong and durable and is great outdoors. Once cured, it will stand up to anything the weather throws at it, wet or dry, hot or cold, it will survive. It also won't fade in the sun and it's fine with sea water too. As sugru is a silicone rubber, it feels soft to touch when it has cured, but is also grippy. This makes it perfect for handles and grips as it is comfortable but non-slip. sugru is also stable in extreme temperatures - as low as -58°F and as high as +356°C. It gets hot and cold to touch but it won't get softer or harder or melt.

But will my sugru fixes last?

Yes, they will! Once it's cured, sugru is pretty much like other silicones - so it's completely waterproof. It's easy to clean with soap and water, and it's durable in the harsh conditions of your washing machine and dishwasher, and even in the sea.

use a sharp knife and then your fingers to remove sugru

But can I remove it?

Yes, you can! sugru can be removed from non-porous materials by cutting it off with a sharp knife and removing any residue with fingernails and a tissue. Easy peasy!

Is there anything else I should know?

sugru is chemically inactive once cured, but people can be allergic to anything so we have to tell you to be careful. sugru isn't certified as food safe or child safe yet. We're working on it, but for now please resist the urge to eat it and don't let your little kids play with it.

sugru has a use by date, you'll find it here

And one last thing...

sugru has a use by date printed on every individual minipack. If you use your sugru within its date, your fixes will last and last. But if your unopened minipacks in keep it in the fridge you can triple sugru's shelf life!

Looks like Sugru will do a lot of cool things and I've seen it will hold up well to heat and steam, and last a long time on tools.

Initially I bought this to fix a few vinyl/plastic model figures that were purchased from a yard sale. One of my friends introduced me to this product and well, I was skeptical at first. But, this thing really does what it says. It does bond very well and cures well on almost everything I've tried it on so far (I've plugged leaks, made rubber grips on some plastic tools and various other things).

For someone using this product for the first time, I definitely recommend reading thru the instructions then going to their website and watching a few videos. But it is very simple. Remove from packaging, roll it around your hands and you can mold/meld it to whatever shape your heart desires and it'll stick to almost everything. After curing, it does leave a bit of the rubber feel (slightly soft rubbery feel) so if that is what you want this would work great. You could also use a gently water/soap solution to smooth out the rubber prior to letting it cure for a smoother feel/appearance. With that said, I'll leave the rest of the review as a list of pro's and concerns I had with this product. It is, overall, a very nice and innovative product and would fit most users quite well I imagine.

+About a 6 month use by date
+Steep price for small amount of product
+Sticks on hands even after wiping with a paper napkin / towel and washing
+About 30 minutes to use it before it starts curing once you open the individual wrapped packet

+Attaches to almost anything
+Easy to work with
+Cures as advertised
+Can mix colors to create almost any color tone you need
+Can smooth it before curing by using water+soap

I love this stuff! It has the consistency of Play-Doh when you open the packets and is easily molded into shapes and sticks to most materials. It's great for fixing things that I wasn't able to fix before and to make some other things more user friendly. It seems expensive but the repair on my vacuum alone would have cost more than the whole package if that part was even available. A multi color 8 pack came with eight 5 gram packets. There were 2 red, 2 blue, 2 yellow, 1 white and 1 black. The product is waterproof, UV resistant, electrically insulating and dishwasher proof when cured. Curing takes 24 hours. But it starts to harden after about half an hour. I was still able to make some changes on one of my projects over an hour later but it was noticeably firmer. When cured it will withstand temperatures of -58 degrees F to 356 F. When it's cured it has the bendability similar to an electrical cord. The thicker it is, the less bendable it becomes. It seems pretty strong, especially a thick piece.

I'm adding a video showing these things that I used it with:

I repaired the cord holder on a vacuum cleaner that had broken off. It works great now, better than the original. I used 1 packet of red for this.

I added some to a plug of a air popper that didn't have an on/off switch and had to be unplugged to turn off. Now it's easier to grab hold of and the shape of my Sugru-thingy makes it easy to wrap the cord when putting it away. The adaptor took 1 packet of yellow.

I used 1 packet of yellow mixed with about a tenth of a packet of black to make sort of a brownish color to stick some leaves back on a silk tree. I had tried glue guns and florist wire previously and neither would stay on because some of the little nubs that hold the branches had broken off.

I purchased Sugru with a few projects in mind. My first project was the modification of a simple point-and-shoot camera I had laying around. I wanted to mount a fisheye lens to this camera. Since the lens didn't fit snug against the body I figured I would need a putty type adhesive, Sugru seemed to be the perfect fit. I also had worn out the soul of my favorite pair of TOMS, figured I could fix that with Sugru, and I was right.

I was really impressed with Sugru's ease of use, simply un-package, kneed, then mold. I found that if you follow the directions any residual Sugru left on your fingers comes off easily.

I was also very pleased to find that Sugru doesn't have a very strong odor. I was worried that it would stink the whole house up, but Sugru only puts off a minimal smell that doesn't linger after it's cured (it smells like dead Ladybugs)

Sugru lived up to, and/or exceed my expectations.

Easy to use.
Works as advertised.
Minimal smell.
Minimal application surface preparation.

5g is not a lot of product.
There is only a one year window between the sell by and the use by date.
24 hour cure time is a little long.

I was anxious to try this product because I was anxious to cover several wrenches without rubber grips. This item did not perform as I'd expected, though I really didn't know what to expect.
The package contained 8 smallish pouches of 'rubber'. You have to cut the foil pouch open on three sides to get the substance out and it doesn't really come out cleanly. You're directed to mash it up in your hands to mix/warm it before applying. It filled grooves well, but did not adhere to the outside chrome handle as I'd wanted. Furthermore, the results were far from the professional looking examples on the package. In reality you can expect it to look as good as it would if you'd globbed play dough on a surface (not real smooth, despite repeated pressure with my thumb trying to produce a smooth surface. One pouch covered both sides of a small wrench, and two pouches covered the handle of a larger 12-16" wrench handle. It does dry nicely and feels nice to the touch. Though I find the bumps and dents a little disappointing. I know this is my inability to smooth it properly and possibly if I worked with it more, it would have come out better.
The other aspect I didn't like, was that it stuck to my fingers and didn't wash off easily. I had blue stuff under my finger nails for a day or two and my fingers remained stained for a day - so don't use this before an evening out!

With practice the results will probably improve, but it's an expensive product to practice with! Use wisely for just the right project.

Bottom line, I'd probably not buy this again, Colored electrical tape works fine for my uses....hand is much more affordable.
