3.0 out of 5 stars excellent example of style, poor on plot and character, May 12, 2009
This thin collection of short stories by RLS is a fine introduction to his technique and excellent word choice, but the stories are not his best and suffer more from style over substance, and form over content. In these, RLS's heroes are too heroic, the villains too contrived, and the gentlemanly justice, honor, and self-centered gallantry of his men at arms too chivalrous under a code of behavior true medieval gentry would scarcely recognize. Flashman and Trevanian's Rude Tales and Glorious are more likely. Still, it is better than most modern offerings, although the language will strike modern readers as artificial and stilted.

Well developed female characters are entirely absent from Stevenson's world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suicide club!, January 25, 2000
That was the best book I've ever read! I'm an avid reader and that was the best! It gave an insight into the mind of a teenage boy growing up in the poverty in the 50's and 60's. It includes everything from drugs, rock and roll, and sex. It's something everyone can relate too, especially those of us who are flower children and hippies but born in the wrong decade. "If you remeber the 60's you weren't there"
