4.0 out of 5 stars Good 80's goth/industrial mix tape
Most of these songs were recorded during the 80's so you've probably already heard them before. If not, you may be surprised at what Ministry and the Cure used to sound like. This is a pretty good introduction to some of the better bands of the goth/industrial genre, but all you kids out there wearing Joy Division T-shirts already knew that. Right? Anyway, many of these...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Thought It Would Be!!!
I bought this because it has a song called Everyday is HALLOWEEN. It wasn't what I expected. In fact, the only song on this CD I liked was Lucretia My Reflection. I probably wouldn't recommend BLACK HEART RETROSPECTIVE!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good 80's goth/industrial mix tape, October 7, 2005

This is a pretty good introduction to some of the better bands of the goth/industrial genre, but all you kids out there wearing Joy Division T-shirts already knew that. Right? Anyway, many of these bands such as NIN and Echo and the Bunnymen are still making quality tunes so check them out. Also take the time to introduce yourself to the vastly underrated Sister's of Mercy who's "Lucretia My Reflection" is just taken to a whole new level of genius by the similarly underrated Alkaline Trio. Enough with the homage. Buy this and check out the Suicide Girls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rap and goth don't go together!, December 24, 2005

I liked most of this cd, but I don't know what was up with sticking a rap song at the end of a goth/industrial comp? I really like Alkaline Trio's cover of Lucretia My Reflection.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT with one exception, July 19, 2011
This review is from: Suicide Girls: Black Heart Retrospective (Audio CD)
This is a GREAT compilation cd with a lot of great highlights of my favorite bands, with the exception of the cover of Lucretia My Reflection. Alkaline Trio is a great band, but they completely sucked the life out of this great Sisters of Mercy song. As far as I know, all the other songs on here are done by the original bands (I could be wrong), but this sticks out. It is totally lifeless compared to the original version. Otherwise, all the rest are great (mostly 1980s) moody, yet upbeat, songs. This is a good "listen to in the rain" cd!! It's worth buying.

Great cd comp. True gothic music not what todays youth call goth just because the lead singer wears black.

Sure, several of the tracks on this compilation are "classics" and the majority of the featured bands are nothing short of legendary in their genre, but it's the thought that counts.

If anything, to a non-Goth/Industrial music fan, this certainly could be a large stepping stone towards discovering a "new" style to enjoy. In other words, this collection of must-haves has more than enough punch to get the conservative listener bouncing...because obviously, if you're not a fan of the style, you probably won't have these songs anywhere in your collection.

This makes the compilation work. Just as the Suicide Girls and their creepy, yet wildly attractive, appearance tiptoes into pop culture, their accompanying mix CD opens a door for new listeners to take a trip back to the 80's and hear what all the fuss was about.

A very, very fun listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Goth goes mainstream?, February 12, 2006
This review is from: Suicide Girls: Black Heart Retrospective (Audio CD)
I received this comp as a present from my girlfriend, and for the most part I *do* like it... as you can see, classic standards in the scene are present here (Echo & The Bunnymen, Gene Loves Jezebel, etc...), so the album does work as a brief taste into the genre.

However, I'm somewhat troubled by the addition of Nine Inch Nails Atmosphere, and Alkaline Trio to the party, only because they seem to be present as filler material - NIN and Alkaline appear as more "mainstream", recognizable names to the uninitiated on the album, while Atmosphere's track seems to be somewhat incongruous with the flow of the album.

I'm also having issues with Alkaline's cover of the Sisters of Mercy classic "Lucretia My Reflection" - it's a decent cover, but nothing like the original standard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice...Very Nice..., December 28, 2005
This review is from: Suicide Girls: Black Heart Retrospective (Audio CD)
Picked this up, not really knowing what to expect, but in turn I was pleasantly surprised! It's a nice mix of 80's Pop/Goth mix, my favorite song "Everyday Is Halloween" by Ministry.
I definitely think it was worth the money!

1.0 out of 5 stars Standard 80s mix - why bother?, January 20, 2006

Almost beneath writing about, this is a K-Tel-ish comp, meaning it's got obvious songs from obvious bands. In fact, you can find 4-CD sets with the same songs for even cheaper. The comp only serves as a reminder that Suicide Girls aren't just a bunch of hot girls on a website, but a fast-growing marketable brand. But the worst thing on this comp, if not on this entire planet, is Alkaline Trio covering "Lucretia My Reflection." NOBODY should ever be allowed to touch that song.
