I think Jjamz did an exceptional job of picking out some of the best of their collective music backgrounds, but putting it all together in a cohesive consistent sound. I would describe it as softly upbeat yet lyrically melancholic indie rock. I know-that's a mouthful. But it really works, it's simply pleasant to listen to and it never gets lost in being pretentious or conversely dumbed down. Also, there are a couple really well done breakdowns that made me really appreciate both the outstanding musicianship as well as song crafting ability of the members. It's the little things all adding up which make an album great for me. Also, I found the lyrics to be conflicted, escapist and definitely thought provoking.
My favorite moments from the album come from the duets on the album. "LAX" will probably be stuck in my head for the next month. Berg and the boys pair really well together--neither eclipses the other, merely enhance--both vocally and musically. It made me think of Angus & Julia Stone mixed with the Beach Boys. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys the members' regular bands (except maybe Maroon 5--this is a very different effort for Valentine), or simply want to have an intelligent fun summer album.
I normally don't care for opening acts because I don't know who they are--as was the case with these guys but as soon as Z Berg sang, wow.
These aren't just a random group of people making music. If you check their backgrounds they're members from popular and golf bands.
This album is mellow but catchy and I didn't think it'd like all their songs but they're phenomenal live and their album is just as good.
So sad they're no longer JJAMZ but Phases. The new stuff doesn't sound much like JJAMZ so I'm a little sad about that but if you're aching for a little California sadness---this is the only think to listen to.
All the tracks are great, but if I had to pick just one.. Square One. It's smoking... the repeat button was invented for songs like this.
This album is so great. If you liked The Like, you'll love this. Can't wait for more from JJAMZ!

reminded me of 70-80 sounds of Blondie and even the Doors! Saw them on one late night show, and enjoyed the sounds and performance.Published on February 22, 2013 by Michael Macaluso
