Editorial Reviews

2012 debut album from the Indie/Alt-Rock supergroup comprised of Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes), James Valentine (Maroon 5), Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet), Michael Runion (solo), and Z Berg (The Like). Only friends as close as JJAMZ could provide such a rewarding synthesis of disparate musical tastes, coupled with perilously revealing lyrics; it's as if Rumours were recorded by My Bloody Valentine, Fiona Apple sang 'Heart of Glass', or Andrew W.K. wrote Saturday Night Fever. This mix of accessibility and surprise stands as JJAMZ' greatest asset. In a collaboration which stems solely from the joy it brings and the refuge it provides, JJAMZ have created a record that needed to be written, and provides that same escape for anyone who listens. Suicide Pact was self-produced by the band with the added talents of Jason Lader (Maroon 5, Rilo Kiley, Julian Casablancas).

I saw them once at a music festival (Jubilee) and was immediately hooked. The production quality and arrangements are definitely impressive. Others could describe the music better than I and when that fails just listen to the samples. Soon enough you'll see boys throwing their underwear onstage at Saturday Night Live. This band is hot and so is the lead singer Z. The band is made up of members of other bands getting together to make music. No doubt they'll go all the way.

All the tracks are great, but if I had to pick just one.. Square One. It's smoking... the repeat button was invented for songs like this.

Last night I saw this band open up for Neon Trees at Webster Hall. Before going to the concert I bought this album after hearing the samples and was not disappointed. My favorite song on this album is "Suicide Pact." Since the conert last night, this song has been stuck in my head all day- and that is a good sign of a hit. My other favorite songs on this album are, "Never Enough," "Get What You Want," "Heartbeat," "LAX," and "Cleverly Disquised." And that's not to say that the other songs are good aren't just as good, but these are the stand outs. The more i listen to these songs, the more I like them. I am so glad that good alternative/pop/rock music is making a huge combeack. If this band plays their cards right... they can be the Blondie of today.

Whenever I see a super-group of artists (which this band is, they are all members of pretty well known bands), I always find it really interesting to try to pick out the different musical influences and see if they all work together. Done well--the music becomes rich and varied. Done wrong--the music sounds disjointed and awkward.

I think Jjamz did an exceptional job of picking out some of the best of their collective music backgrounds, but putting it all together in a cohesive consistent sound. I would describe it as softly upbeat yet lyrically melancholic indie rock. I know-that's a mouthful. But it really works, it's simply pleasant to listen to and it never gets lost in being pretentious or conversely dumbed down. Also, there are a couple really well done breakdowns that made me really appreciate both the outstanding musicianship as well as song crafting ability of the members. It's the little things all adding up which make an album great for me. Also, I found the lyrics to be conflicted, escapist and definitely thought provoking.

My favorite moments from the album come from the duets on the album. "LAX" will probably be stuck in my head for the next month. Berg and the boys pair really well together--neither eclipses the other, merely enhance--both vocally and musically. It made me think of Angus & Julia Stone mixed with the Beach Boys. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys the members' regular bands (except maybe Maroon 5--this is a very different effort for Valentine), or simply want to have an intelligent fun summer album.
