5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked masterpiece May 31, 2010
I bought a mono version of this album new in a record shop (obviously a long time ago). I've been watching for it to come out in CD form and am very pleased to see some attention being paid to it after all these years. I'd love to have a stereo CD to replace my well-worn vinyl. I've always wondered what it would sound like in stereo -- it seems like such a natural for it. I hope the company owning the rights decides to put it out during my lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare find! July 23, 2009
By R. Kerr
I have had this record for some time and was lucky enough to pick it up in a secondhand store for a few dollars. Whoever owned it before I got my greedy hands on it obviously wasn't a fan of the big brass sound as it is in mint condition so has not been played much. It is mono, of course, but Nat Hentoff in the write-up extols the virtue of hearing it in stereo and to quote, "This album, I expect, will do a lot toward convincing listeners of just how much more you can hear in stereo." Strange then that it was issued in mono. I don't know what stage stereo recording had reached in 1959 so may it was originally intended. The music is great with, dare I say, a touch of Kenton or even Sauter-Finegan. One more quote from the back cover. Hentoff says that Les Brown was so pleased with the date he said, "This one rates a special award". How can I not but agree. Pity that it hasn't been re-issued.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever October 22, 2008
I first heard this album in 1958-59 and it soon became and still is my all-time favorite. A friend and I had all the cuts memorized and could easily offer a rendition of any of the cuts anytime, anywhere in a "scat" type way. Our favorite cut was "Sorcerer and the Latin." The duel between the two bands on that cut is unbeatable. I still have the album.
