Editorial Reviews

Bassist/composer Omer Avital defines the words creative and prolific, with more than a half dozen new recordings of original music released over the past several years. Suite Of The East is the end result of a month-long residency at Smalls (in Greenwich Village, NYC), and a guerrilla recording session, that took place during the spring of 2006. At this time Avital had a collection of original compositions that were written towards the end of his three-year stay in Israel, and completed in New York City. The compositions naturally belonged together, linked by a common thread that runs through all of the tunes.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Lucas J. Munson on January 19, 2013
Format: Audio CD
This album is an absolute blast! Full of vibrancy and energy with a few contemplative moments to keep things interesting. Avital is a native of Israel by way of New York (where these songs took their final shape), which is completely evident throughout this collection. Modern jazz tendencies with a 50's New York sensibility commingle with whirlwinds of middle-eastern flavor providing an exchange amongst the modern, the classic, and the timeless. When first learning that Avital is a bassist (as this was my first introduction to his work, which I heard online before seeing the album cover's obvious giveaway), I was surprised--because of the strength of the horns and their place in the mix, I would have expected him to be amongst their ranks. It is nice to listen to a songwriter/bandleader who is as attentive to his bandmates as he is to showing off his own chops (which he does easily during his "Bass Meditation" that rounds out the album's 7 tracks). The true strength of this collection is how well the talents of each player mix together just as powerfully as their diverse influences seem to do within each song. Overall, I can honestly say I haven't been this excited about a new jazz release in years. Please do yourself a favor and give this album a try.
