Editorial Reviews

Review

Ms. Metzger's playing of this baroque literature is at once elegant and articulate...It is certainly a level above the dull, mechanical playing of this repertoire too often heard these days." -- Agnes Armstrong, The American Organist

About the Artist

Nancy Metzger has concertized on both harpsichord and organ throughout the United States and abroad. A resident of Sacramento, California, she holds a master's degree in music history, and has been a college music professor as well as a church organist.

She is the author of Harpsichord Technique: A Guide to Expressivity, now in its second edition. This book, along with its comopanion cassette recording, is widely used as a manual for Baroque performance as well as a "how to" for harpsichord touch.

Mrs. Metzger has performed for the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, Region VIII of the American Guild of Organists, the Oregon Music Teachers Association, and for various colleges and civice, professional and denominational groups. Recent venues include the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; St. Norbert's Priory, Kommetjie, Western Cape, South Africa; and Beloit College, Beloit, WI. She has been featured on FM radio programs in Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles and has received grants and awards from Mu Phi Epsilon and the Oregon Arts Commission.\par She pursued musical studes at Syracuse University, the University of Oregon, and California State University, Sacramento. She studied harpsichord in Berkeley, California with Laurette Goldberg.

This is a refreshing, stylistically informed performance. Having had both the amazing treat of hearing her play more than one recital and subsequently taking lessons from Mrs. Metzger, her insight and her ability to play Bach with a true understanding of the music historically and expressively has been a great joy. I never tire of hearing her play. Perhaps the other two reviewers are not willing to accept her approach to this style? A student of Laurette Goldberg, she has both a studied and practical understanding of what playing Baroque music is all about. As for tempos, this is a hot topic among so many. It deserves in depth study before criticism. Most people play Bach way to fast and lose the real sense of the music. I highly recommend!

I was given a copy of this CD by a student who insisted that the tempo of the coda of Bach's famous Toccata in D was at half tempo. I concluded he was mistaken until I listened to it. He was indeed right about it being played at half-speed. Obviously, this section exceeds Ms Metzher's technical ability, but one wonders why she didn't increase the tempo digitally. The entire CD is filled with similar quirks and it's difficult to understand why she released sub-standard performances of well-known repertoire. The playing defies description and I regret to say that there is nothing to recommend this CD.

Not an enjoyable thing to listen to. My old harpsichord teacher had me buy Metzger's book "Harpsichord: A Guide to Expressivity," and this CD came free with it. It fits nicely into that category of recordings in non-reverberant spaces with music that just sort of drones on.
