5.0 out of 5 stars This movie comes up short, so does the $$$ ..., July 30, 2011
This review is from: Sultanes del Sur (DVD)
If you like choppy gritty Spanish movies about well planned bank robberies going South, literally, then watch this movie.

The actress looks like Penelope Cruz.

There's drama, action, camraderie, car chases, bullets, bombs & $12 million missing dollars.

See if you can find them.

I'll bet you come up short.
;)

3.0 out of 5 stars a long shot short of Matando Cabos, December 7, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had high expectations of this film, coming as it did from the director and star of Matando Cabos. Unfortunately, however, Sultanes del Sur just falls flat on so many levels. Worst of all, the script literally misses the punch line time and time again; it seems like they never had anyone proofread the first draft of the script. That said, as someone with a background in Mexico I did find the (narrow) look into Argentina quite interesting... but the attractions of Sultanes del Sur are mostly on the surface, which far from makes up for its abundant shortcomings. It seems that Mexico's decade as the prominent foreign film-producing nation is all but officially over. I raise my Cuervo tequila shot glass to waiting for the 2070s.

Regarding this import DVD from Mexico, it plays fine on region 1 USA players and also had English subtitles (despite not saying so). I would have liked Spanish subtitles to understand the Argentines, however, as their Napoli-laced Spanish is difficult to understand (which was probably intentional on the part of the film-maker to add to the feeling of abandonment).
