This review is from: Sultanistic Regimes (Paperback)
While there's quite a lot written about party and military regimes, there's not as much on personalist regimes. Sultanistic Regimes attempts to remedy that, at least for the extreme form of "sultanistic" personalist regimes. The book is split into a theoretical section and case studies. The theoretical section does a pretty good job at generalizing essential features of sultanistic regimes and providing reasons for their rise and fall. The case studies also incorporate theoretical elements in their discussion of particular countries, rather than simply rehash each leader's abuses. Overall, this is a useful reference for students of non-democratic regimes.
