Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their… Read more in Amazon's Dire Straits Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonus live disc is just great!, August 28, 2003
By
Eerik Lehto (Nahkela, Uusimaa Finland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sultans of Swing: Best of (Audio CD)
Best of collections are always easy way to start listening some band or artist, but seldom the real fan of the artist is not getting very much out of those best of collections, if all the formerly published records are already on the CD rack.

This CD is not the usual "the best of" -collection. The real value is on the Bonus disc. Live recording from Wembley stadium is just amazing and worth of buying! I bought this version even I had the same cd without Bonus disc! Live disc contains a legendary live versions of Sultans of Swing and Brothers in Arms recorded in very high quality. You may have heard the live version of Sultans of Swing in Alchemy live, but this is better, extremely professional sound quality and amazing specimen of skill in quitar playing by Mark Knopfler, more feeling, more ambience. Even you are serious fan or just freshman in listening Dire Straits, I really recommend this one. You'll get comprehensive collection of their music with one of the best live recordings ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Best Of Dire Straits And Bonus Live Disc from 1998., October 18, 2010
This review is from: Sultans of Swing: Best of (Audio CD)
At present there are several Dire Straits collections around and disc 1 contains many tracks which can be found on those, for example Romeo And Juliet, Private Investigations and Walk Of Life.
Lady Writer is more of a rarity and a very good one too.
I'm not so taken by Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel and On Every Street.
The live tracks are all well worth having, Love Over Gold, Your Latest Trick and from Local Hero, Wild Theme.
At almost 80 minutes it's all good quality and Mark Knofler leads the band from the front with his trademark guitar and vocals.
The bonus disc songs are from a 1998 concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
1.Calling Elvis. 9.07.
2.Walk Of Life. 5.28.
3.Last Exit To Brooklyn. 2.33.
4.Romeo And Juliet. 7.30.
5.Sultans Of Swing. 13.14.
6.Brothers In Arms. 8.54.
7.Money For Nothing. 6.37.
The concert appears to be quite inimate between the band and the audiance.
While disc 1 has many plus points, disc 2 is the clincher, this Limited Edition really is worth seeking out.
