Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Aptly named, Baxter's latest novel boasts sensuality as its strongest feature--the attraction between the hero and heroine sparks fire from the first and keeps on burning hot throughout. Modern-day Southern belle Lindsay Newman hopelessly falls for Mitch Rawlins, the caretaker of her father's estate, and their forbidden affair is at the center of this drama. Lindsay, emotionally cold since the day she found her mother dead from suicide, strengthens and blossoms under Mitch's attention; however, her ultradomineering father has hand-picked a husband for her, and his discovery of her less-than-suitable lover launches a vicious tug-of-war for control over Lindsay's life. With her success at developing both a women's shelter and Mitch's devotion, Lindsay discovers the strength to finally stand up to her father and gain emancipation from his tyranny. Despite several steamy love scenes and some tantalizing plot twists, Baxter's (Hard Candy) flat dialogue and one-dimensional characters detract from the excitement in this familiar wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance. 1.0 out of 5 stars awful--don't waste your time, June 27, 2000
By A Customer

I usually love M.L.Baxter. This book, however, stunk! Bad. The heroine was totally unlikable and a whiny baby (with a father complex). And, let's face it--things like getting married to the family "gardener" and then keeping the marriage a secret from family while you continue to live in the "big house" and he lives in the caretaker's cottage just don't happen in real life. DUMB! DUMB! DUMB!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sultry, November 7, 2000
This review is from: Sultry (Mass Market Paperback)

In the story, the heroine falls for the gardener, but he has a secret. When the heroine's brother becomes involved in some shady prescription drug deals, they have dire consequences on the heroine.

The basic plot is that the rich girl marries the gardener, and it's true she doesn't move in with him, right away, which could have been written differently, but it worked as at the time she was angry at the hero. The reason she is so weepy is because of a trauma she had in her past (causing her a clinical depresion), and the tragedy she faces. I thought that by the end, she was quite strong, not letting her father or brother, or the hero, control her.

The book does not have a deep, thought provoking plot, but is well written, and very enjoyable. If you are looking for an easy, quick read to help you escape for a few hours, this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rich Girl....Poor Boy, October 21, 2002

This review is from: Sultry (Mass Market Paperback)
Despite popular opinion, I found this to be a good book. I did not give it 5 stars because the heroine, Belle Lindsay Newman, allowed her conniving father too much control over her life. He never deserved such loyalty from her. It was amazing, the dirt this rich ruler did in order to keep the Newman family name clean. It was way... pass time for her to move out of the "Big House".

The gorgeous hero, Mitch Rawlins aka Estate Manager, the gardener and Ex-FBI agent, considered the Boss' daughter off-limits but falls hard-loves Lindsay unconditionally and refuses to let her family sweep him under the carpet. Though they both had secrets, they eventually opened up to their true feelings for each other. The road is rough and has many twist and turns but it eventually becomes smooth sailing.....
