5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, April 28, 2001

This review is from: Sumera: Musica Tenera; Piano Concerto; Symphony No.4 (Audio CD)
I agree with Karl, but I find the Piano Concerto one of the most rewarding of the 20th Century. Yes, it is superficially simple, but the way Sumera expands on the quirky little theme that opens the work is masterly. Momentum and passion build in the last (2nd) movement in a way that just carries me away.

Symphony 4 and M. Tenera are also very fine, and there is outstanding sound.

I agree with Karl that Bis 660 (Syms 1-3) is the place to start with Sumera; if you are moved by them, you owe it to yourself to try this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Gem, September 23, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sumera: Musica Tenera; Piano Concerto; Symphony No.4 (Audio CD)
Many folks, myself included, have become jaded by terms such as "minimalist", "the new minimalism", etc. And while I really like minimalism I don't like everything that has been placed in that somewhat arbitrary category.
Well fear not! Lepo Sumera is clearly influenced by minimalist techniques but he creates a unique and impressive sound all his own.
The real gem here is the Symphony No. 4. It is a grand symphonic work for a large orchestra very much in the best tradition of a symphony. The late composer's use of minimalist techniques owes a debt to his predecessors but is not derivative or trite. This is really good music which requires intelligent listening and which rewards the dedicated listener again with each hearing.
I almost feel bad about giving only 4 stars but I don't want to exaggerate or oversell this music. In fact I believe that with reapeated listenings my opinion of this disc will only improve.
I have already ordered almost all of the music currently available by this composer. I think that posterity will recognize him as a truly significant artist and will lament that he only lived some 50 years. Undoubtedly he would have had even more wonderful ideas to share with the world.
If you are interested in things minimalist, post-romantic, etc. you should check out this disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must own CD for fans of nothern classical music, November 12, 1999
By
karlm (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sumera: Musica Tenera; Piano Concerto; Symphony No.4 (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD as soon as it came out. Although I recommend the first CD (Symphonies 1,2,3) for those just getting started with this composer, this CD is a valuable addition to fans. This music sounds more simple than it actually is, but has complex texture, and shape.

Great recording.
