4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant but expensive way to read the Summa, December 3, 2011

This review is from: Summa Theologiae: Volume 1, Christian Theology: 1a. 1 (Summa Theologiae (Cambridge University Press)) (Latin and English Edition) (Paperback)
I bought the first volume of this series, and I found it to be a very enjoyable way to read the Summa. The book is a parallel reading of the Summa, with the Latin on the left side, and the English on the right. The translation is very readable (though a bit too interpretive at times, for my preference). The notes are very extensive, frequently providing details about translation issues, explanations of Aquinas' philosophical terminology, and full references to literature that Aquinas quotes or alludes to. The paperback itself is attractive and the print style pleasant.

The biggest issue I have with this series is price. For $40+ you get a pretty small slice of the Summa, which I think is lame for a book that has been "public domain" for centuries. The price would be more palatable if it was hardcover; rather, being such a light paperback, it is doubtful the publishers paid even $4 a book for the printing. Being on a rather tight budget, I'm not sure I'll every be able to afford the rest of the series.
