I love the summer bridge activity books, my older daughter has the 4th to 5th grade book and it is excellent. This book is a great book as well except it isn't a great bridge to 1st grade because all of the activities in the book are things she did at the start of Kindergarten. If she did this book she would be regressing, even near the end of the book it doesn't get to the level she was working at end of kindergarten.

The book never goes past adding or subtracting single digits, only in the very end of the book do they start writing words. The child starts out by practice writing numbers and letters, inserting the missing letters, circling or drawing a line to an object that starts with a certain sound, counting objects up to 10, finishing basic patterns, matching lower case to upper case, completing number sequences. There is some reading comprehension and that is when they finally begin to write single word answers which are pretty much the only point throughout the whole book where they are asked to write a word, there are about 5-7 of those pages, and each page only has maybe 3-5 words they are supposed to write.

It does include some science experiments and physical activities which I like.

Overall this would be a great book for a child just starting to become familiar with letters, numbers and the concepts that they represent (counting, phonics, and simple addition and subtraction). I think this is more a start of kindergarten book instead of something that will help prepare you for, and bridge over to first grade.

My son was really looking forward to starting his summer bridge book this year. Overall, the activities are just the right level for K-1. The book gets more challenging as you get to the end, which is perfect to get ready for school by the end of the summer. They recommend just a page or two per day, but I think that would depend on the child. And I think this version is an improvement over the previous version--more varied activities incorporating social sciences in with the math and reading.

I really liked this book for use over the summer to help my son. He is struggling to learn basic math and how to read and this book helped him over the summer. I will buy the book for each grade level every summer for both of my boys to practice. Kids lose so much over the summer months if they do not practice. It does not take many minutes a day to get through this book plus do some reading in addition. Every child should be doing this over the summer.

I have to say I was pretty impressed with this book. My son loves doing workbooks with me, especially this one. Before we knew it one day he had done 5 or 6 lessons and fourty five minutes had passed! We have not really stuck to the book the way it is intended but it has been a great way to keep him in engaged in this form of learning over the summer. The book is very well organized and includes math, reading and suggests hands on activities and even some fitness ideas. My son is a little advanced for his age and likes to step aheadin some areas but is merely on pace with others. This book allowed me to get a gage on the "trouble" spots that still needed development. I have absolutely no teaching background so sometimes knowing what to teach him is harder than teaching him. I was delighted at how easy it was to use this workbook to teach him what he did not know and really get a broad idea of his skills and areas to work on. Many of the things he did know were presented in this workbook in ways that were just different enough from the other stack that they were new and engaging. If used as intended I truly feel that each lesson is just enough time to engage in learning without feeling they are stuck with "homework". This extra ten minutes for the workbook section can be easily added to the bedtime or early morning routine without interrupting the schedule. I appreciated that the plans flowed from one to the other to make each an easy transition and that there was a really broad range of addition, subraction, phonics, counting, numbers, letters, sight words, telling basic time and more.

I bought this for a summer workbook for the past three summers and have been very, very pleased. It is well written and I know it helps my children retain the information they worked hard to learn during the school year. It also helps them immensely when they are tested in the fall for their new class placements.

I bought this book to make sure that I inject some education into the summer. I gave it to my son for his birthday thinking that he would throw it like it was socks or underwear at Christmastime. He wasn't thrilled but didn't make a fuss. The next day he sat down and did ten pages all by himself. He is enjoying the activities, especially putting stickers on each page he finishes. I am very pleased with this purchase.
