Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9 When Jesse Wellington's mother is seriously injured in an auto accident, Jesse and his father, who have a poor relationship, have to deal with each other without a buffer. The older man is a martinet who refuses to believe that his son can do anything right. Jesse is a good runner and knows a great deal about birds, but he is very much afraid of his father and his own upcoming freshman year in high school. His father ``volunteers'' him for a summer job looking after an old woman, a job that repulses Jesse until he finds himself attracted to the woman's granddaughter. It is not until the end of the story, when the father insists that the boy come with him to hunt game birds, that Jesse finally speaks up to his father. It is then that readers discover what has been keeping the man from becoming close to his son all these years. While the main story line is difficult to accept (the reason given for the father's distaste for his only son is unconvincing), this doesn't destroy the story because the writing is more than competent, and the setting of the New Jersey shoreline in summer is well presented. Pollock understands the pain of a difficult summer in the life of a 14 year old. Jesse's low-key romance helps a lot, too. Robert E. Unsworth, Scarsdale Junior High School, N.Y.
