Lois Lenski was a prolific author and illustrator of classic books for children; from picture books to plays, regional historical fiction, poetry, and songbooks, her work was always playful, ever educational. She is counted among the most influential author-illustrators of the 20th century. Bestowed the Newbery Medal for Strawberry Girl, and twice attaining the Newbery Honor, she died in 1974.

This book is a wonderful story of pretend play. It is about a sister and brother who play outside in the yard for the day. They pretend to be on a train, be in school, go to church, go grocery shopping. They pretend to be different animals, climb trees, swing on a swing. The pictures show the children making a "train", a "school", a "church", a "grocery store" out of everyday objects -- boxes and dolls and cans and such. I enjoyed reading about children being imaginative and creative and making their own fun and toys. It is a great example for children of what fun they can have not watching TV! It is also nice to see a brother and sister playing so well together. There is a little song included at the beginning of the book that you can sing with your child. The story is very happy and fun.

Ridiculously expensive now that it's out of print, but such a sweet, charming book. Like all the other Lenski season books, it portrays a brother and sister having great fun together in a wholesome, imaginative way. My daughter has been in love with these books since she was 18 months old. They are really great for teaching young children about the joys of each season. I find I can read them aloud to her 100s of times without ever really hating them (that doesn't sound like praise, but it surely is).

I got the other three for so little, that I figured the high price of this one could be averaged out over the whole collection!
