Actually I have this doubled with the "Today" album, January 5, 2009
This review is from: Summer Days (Audio CD)
However, I wanted to single this out as a separate album. This was the last studio album before "Pet Sounds" came along. I can now see where Brian was going with "Pet Sounds" as this album was downright experimentive. It all begins with "The Girl From NYC" with it's raga-surf sounding guitar, then along comes "Help Me Rhonda" With my version it includes both album, and single versions, and they are as different as night and day. I'm not sure which version I like better. "Girl Don't Tell Me" I've loved this song from first hear when I was 11. It's got real agnst about girls who make you feel that there's something there when they don't mean it. I also got my question answered as to who sang on that track. All along I thought it was Mike, or Brian imagine my surprise when it was neither. Imagine my thought that it was Carl definitely an underrated singer indeed. "California Girls" where do I stop singing the praises about this track? Brian may have felt it had it's flaws, but I can not deny the intro which to me is a beautiful wake-up song...I can just imagine it stirring me out of my sleep, and I would feel downright rested no matter how little, or much sleep I got the night before. "Let Him Run Wild" has all the potential of being a commercial hit why didn't the group just go out on faith, and release it as a "A" side single? Mind you the song also has Brian's creative touches all over the song too, but still this would be a song I wouldn't get tired of hearing on the radio. "Salt Lake City" is a mystery to me. To hear this song you'd think that surfing goes on there, but it's a land-locked state with Nevada to the west, Colorado to the east, Idaho to the north, and Arizona to the south. It's still a nice little surfer number though. The album does have it's weak moments here too such as: "Amusement Parks U.S.A.", "I'm Bugged At My Old Man", "You're So Good To Me", but it shows the balancing act that Brian was trying to do with this album, and I feel for the most part he came off looking pretty good.
