Book Description

Jenna Shaw ran away to escape her past. In fact, she jumped on a plane and flew to Portugal to try and forget it. However, it turns out leaving everything behind isn’t as easy as it sounds.

She thought she could move on and break free of her fears—that if she had some space the pain would stop. But as memories resurface due to an ill-timed joke, the past crashes into her present once more and she didn’t see it coming.
Jenna’s plans for normality are derailed by the charismatic Ethan Brooks. She sees him as an annoyance; he sees her as a challenge. But as he tries every trick known to him to impress her, they only serve to push her further away. He’s never faced this problem before and Ethan has to work harder than he ever has if he wants to win over and help his mysterious girl.

A young adult romance, this novella would be a great book for teenagers or as a feel-good summer read.

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading, loves anything paranormal and has an overactive imagination that keeps her up until the early hours of the morning. With three poems published before the age of sixteen, Mia moved on to short stories but finding she had too much to tell with too little space, Mia progressed to novels. She started her first series (The Wanderer Trilogy) at the age of fourteen and since then hasn’t stopped writing. Elemental Killers is her second series and with an ever growing list of ideas, Mia is trying to keep up with the speed at which her imagination generates them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh,the baggage we carry. March 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jenna's boyfriend Zac died horribly and she blames herself. On vacation with her friend Amy to try and get rid of the demons that make her feel guilty Jenna meets Ethan and the adventure and the trip back from her guilt begin. This was a good read and I believe young adults will enjoy reading about people their own age and see that we all have similar stories of putting past baggage behind us so we can move on and enjoy our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer Demons: A Beautiful Novella October 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After her life is torn apart by the tragic death of her boyfriend, Jenna Shaw finds herself equally consumed by guilt and despair. In an attempt to pick up the pieces of her shattered life, she escapes from England to Portugal with her friend, Amy, for a much-needed vacation. While there, Jenna meets Ethan Brooks, who is immediately infatuated with her. Ethan is charismatic, charming, and a true ladies’ man. But can he fix Jenna’s broken spirit?

This is the second book I have read by Mia Hoddell and, like the first one, I wasn’t disappointed. Summer Demons is a sweet, well-written, feel-good novella. It's loaded with witty dialogue, which kept me thoroughly entertained throughout. Ms. Hoddell’s character development is outstanding and I was impressed with how much Jenna’s character, in particular, evolved throughout the story from being in a state of utter darkness to finding herself on a path toward healing.

A standalone, Summer Demons is the first novella in Ms. Hoddell’s Seasons of Change series and, given how much I enjoyed it, I will definitely be continuing on with the next novellas in the series.

I highly recommend this novella for those who love of YA/NA romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Summer Read July 18, 2014
Format:Paperback
Jenna has just lost her boyfriend. She blames herself for his death. He jumped off a cliff that Jenna egged him on to jump from. Except he didn’t make it and Jenna was also there to find him in the water and she froze when she saw his broken body and now doesn’t do well with water. So her friend takes her away to help her try to move on. Jenna isn’t moving on well at all. She is in the pool and some guy trying to vie for her attention turns over her float in the pool. Jenna’s friend jumps in to help her as she panics in the water. The man feels bad and does everything he can to help her overcome and maybe see him as well.

Slowly he, Ethan, and her friend help her to overcome her past and move on in the world of the living.

This is a novella. It is also written in the third person, which I don’t normally like but it worked here. The characters are believable and the setting beautiful and the story flows well. I was pulling for Ethan all the way hoping he would help her, but first she has to help herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, sweet and excellent! October 3, 2014
By PaigeM.
Format:Kindle Edition
Short, sweet and excellent! Mia Hoddell has created complex characters and a well rounded plot in the space of a mere 160 pages, so bravo! I loved this book! You can clearly see how Jenna grows through a short amount of time and Ethan is simply Hottie McHottie pants (no complaining though wink wink).

Not only did I like the budding romance, but this is just one of those feel-good summer romance stories that take you back to the sun and surf (especially since the autumn chill is starting to set in here at school). Even though I wish it could have been a little longer, I still think the story works really well because it leaves you wondering what is going to happen next. Hopefully there will be some hints in the next one of the series (even though I know that one is about Jenna's friend Amy).

Nevertheless, I am excited to start the next novella in the series and can't wait to see what Mia Hoddell has in store for us next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel Good Summer Read June 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
'Summer Demons' is a young adult summer romance novella about a teenager who is struggling to get over a traumatic incident she blames herself for; she certainly isn't looking for a summer fling. However, she catches the attention of a guy who is determined to make her give him a chance and the story develops from there. I will admit romance is not my favourite genre but having read Hoddell's paranormal series and thoroughly enjoying it I decided to give this a try and I wasn't disappointed. It was more than just a girl-meets-boy kind of story, there was a lot of depth to it. It also has a dark twist to it as the main character has some awful things to let go of but in the end this is a feel good story. Great summer read. Highly recommended to fans of romance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Find June 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
No one really knows another person's story. Jenna has a history that causes her to be afraid of water because it not only forces her to remember the lose of a love one, but also guilt. Jenna is on a holiday with her friend Amy who will do anything to cheer her friend's low spirits after the tragedy of Jenna's boyfriend dying. Yet, fate has another thing in mind for her, that includes a knee melting grin.

This was the first Mia Hoddell book that I have read, and I'm sure there will be more in the future. Her writing is flowing in a manner that allows the readers to be planted in the scene, but not too wordy. The characters even for a short story are very well developed so that the readers are still feeling the sorrow of Jenna. As Jenna tries to find herself, it is a believable progress of emotions for someone who went through what Jenna went through. Readers will not be disappointed.
