Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- This latest book on the Yellowstone fire of 1988 is an admirable updating of the environmental history of the area. Interesting, action-filled writing plus a very detailed description of the fire and how it spread make for exciting reading. There is a good explanation of the area's attractions and the geologic forces of nature at work. The new, clear full-color photographs are outstanding. They are full page, well labeled, and include many of the wildlife species found in the park. A single map shows fire locations; there are no regional or national maps. A good glossary and useful bibliography are appended. Lauber raises all the important questions regarding regrowth, loss of species, fire damage, and change, but she doesn't supply as many concrete, specific answers as serious young scientists will want. Environmental concerns are well addressed; economic issues are not covered. Libraries not owning Patent's Yellowstone Fires: Flame and Rebirth (Holiday, 1990) or Vogel's The Great Yellowstone Fire (Sierra Club/Little, 1990) will wish to purchase this title. Where there is sufficient interest, this newer title should also be considered.

From Kirkus Reviews

Grounding her narrative in outstanding color photos of plants and animals before, during, and after the awe-inspiring conflagration that burned 2,600,000 acres, Lauber gives more attention to renewal than either Vogel's The Great Yellowstone Fire or Patent's Yellowstone Fires (both 1990), postulating questions that scientists and naturalists are currently studying: ``If an area has been heavily burned, how quickly do bugs colonize it?'' ``Do large burned patches grow back at the same rate as small burned out patches?'' This strikingly beautiful book has larger and clearer photos than Patent's, while Vogel's lacks an index: Lauber is a first choice. Glossary; further reading; index. This review is from: Summer Of Fire: Yellowstone 1988 (Hardcover)
If you've been through Yellowstone lately, you've seen the path of the 1988 fire. The sadness felt by many about the "losses" in the park will be greatly reduced after reading this fine book. The photos alone are enough to help people realize the good fire can do to a landscape. The well-written text explains, without jargon, the biology of a fire. If you're a Yellowstone fan, wildlife fan or woodland firefighter fan, I'd recommend this book.
