Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 1--Artistically appealing, these books feature stunning, full-color photography and an interesting page layout and typeface, but they fall short in content. Autumn depicts and labels a "calculator," hardly a tool for this audience. The garden pages show bulbs that are planted in the fall and bloom in the spring, an abstract concept for most five year olds. The holidays include Bonfire Night, Thanksgiving, Diwali, and the Chinese Moon Festival, which gives lip service to multiculturalism to an age group that could well be confused by these isolated photos of extended rituals. Spring and Summer use images that have been associated with these seasons for generations: spring cleaning, rain clothes, cherry blossoms, and seeds; and peaches, strawberries, beach trips, green salads, and picnics. Winter shows bedtime snugglies, as if these are not common in other seasons. The foods included are brussels sprouts, leeks, and acorn squash, which are fall vegetables in most places. The author's efforts to bring in holidays from many cultures is laudable, but a single photograph with no context is not enough. Mediocre fare.
