The latching mechanism is cheap plastic.

The latch takes some practice to get the hang of, but I can do it one handed while carrying a baby.

I highly recommend this gate for pets or toddlers.

I'm amazed at the extremely low reviews these Summer Infant gates are getting. These gates are absolutely wonderful. They are very sturdy, smooth in motion and they latch with a nice, solid feel. They look great and can easily be painted to match your decor. I didn't want hideous plastic gates uglifying my nice house.

I played with all kinds of gates, from plastic ones to wood ones to wire ones. I have 2 of these. I bought them because they are strong metal gates with reliable locking mechanisms and are extremely adjustable to varying-sized openings. I have one opening that is 5 feet wide and another that is 3 feet wide. My dogs and my son all beat on these gates and they're both doing great after 2 years.

Just like with any semi-permanent gate structure, installation is VERY important. Don't let someone with no mechanical ability install this(OR ANY) gate. You need to know where the wall-studs are and you need to properly install gates plumb and level to be happy with the functionality. If you don't know what you're doing, find your neighborhood handyman and pay him(or her) with the beverage of their choice. :) You know your abilities/shortcomings.

This is easily the best functioning gate I have ever owned. Additionally, when I called the manufacturer to purchase an extra set of hinges in case the 1st set break, they sent them FREE.
IF installed properly this is an easy gate to install and use. ANYONE w/ any basic mechanical skills and a level and ruler can install this. The plastic templates make it a 15 minute task.

3 months and counting of problem-free, pet-containing, use...

Verified Purchase
We purchased these gates after being pleased with the purchase of some other Summer Infant products. I am an experienced carpenter and installed these gates exactly per the instructions. The latch mechanism of this gate is a fundamentally bad design. First, the latch really can't be operated with one hand-- you need one to press the latch lever at the same time you need to use the other hand to lift up the gate at the hinge side (using a significant amount of force). The gate is also very loud when it closes-- you need to use a lot of force to engage the latch. Not a good design if you are carrying a baby or have a sleeping baby around.

We tried two other gates before this one but returned them because they didn't meet our needs. This gate is great. It has the installation flexibility to mount in a large number of locations and applications. I appreciated all the adjustment options. We kept this one because it doesn't have a bar running across the floor like most of the other gates. We felt that was an unnecessary trip hazard that would be extremely dangerous at the top of the stairs. Plus the gate opens fully. The others were made like a fence with a small gate in the middle. We felt the opening was too small for a new mom with baby in tow to negotiate. I loved the fact that this gate opens from wall to wall and swings completely out of the way when not in use. We have had it up for three months now and it works perfectly. The latch is very secure and opens easily with one hand once you get use it pressing down with your thumb as you pull up with your hand. The price was great. Combined with the features the value is unbeatable.

Having tried two other "popular" models first I can tell you this one has a much better design. It will require some skill to install. They all did. You will need some handy man skills and tools. I have both and it took me about an hour to install. I did have to add a piece of trim to the railing at the top of the stairs. The location of the brackets didn't match up to the flat surfaces of the curved spindles. Not a big deal for someone with handy man skills. I just went to the hardware store and had them cut a piece of 1x3 to length for me and screwed it to the spindle making a flat surface from floor to rail. This gate was slightly more work to install but well worth it. The features are 10x better.

Let's just say that I would have written a much worse review the day we installed the thing! Now that it is up it seems to be a good gate. Sturdy and easy to open & latch shut. We have it a the top of the stairs. BUT - installing it was a ....bear. Two extremely grumpy parents by the time we were finished. The directions are not good and we had to take it apart twice to get it to line up with the latches on the banister even though we followed directions step by step. The only other thing I am not crazy about is the piece on the gate the goes into the latch is just adjusted using a nut. I am sure they could have come up with something a little better - it is metal and scratches you and I have had to tighten. Not something that I think would come off or affect the safety of the gate though. I haven't tried any other top of stair gates...I DO love that the entire gate swings out and there is nothing to trip over, which I was looking for in a stairs gate. Buy it, but have someone else watch the baby and get out the wine while you install it! :)

Overall, I am happy with the product. I find that it is a little hard to open at times, but I feel it is very secure and sturdy.
