4.0 out of 5 stars For its time humorous and exotic/who was that mystery women?, October 14, 1999

This review is from: Summer Job [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The movie was a classic boy meets girl thing.I must say whoever that mystery women was should've had a larger part. She caught my eye the first time they panned across the pool. I also noticed she played two rolls in the movie. The madam at the top of the stairs & the sexy mystery pool women.Although i believe that black wig was a little cheesy. She possesed a beauty that doesnt come from showing off her flesh she does it through acting and isnt that what actings all about.Hope to see her again in a serious film demonstrating her true acting skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jay Summer is a god trapped in a man's body, September 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Summer Job [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The film debut of Jay Summer can best be described as nothing short of brilliant and stunning. When the would-be actor first was cast as the titilating "Jason" in Summer Job, the rest of the movie's crew was agast as this was the firsr real acting job for the Hollywood fledgling. But as the plot thickened, it was obvious that the young Summer was a perfect fit for the young Cowboy in love. His career has blossemed since and has only aged like fine wine. Other cast members will agree, the movie will long live in Teen "coming of age" movie history as a statement for that tender young age when we all fine our first job, first love and all during our first REAL Summer.

OrKestra - Beyond The Dream (Alfa International, ALCB-625, Japan 1991)

Track Listing

1. Fly Away 2. Everybody's Got To Need Somebody 3. Beyond The Dream 4. Don't Give Up 5. Some Kind Of Magic 6. Don't You Read My Letters 7. Hold On To Love 8. This Is The Night 9. Don't Turn Away 10. Bring On The Dancing Girls 11. Who's That Calling

The tracks are written mainly by a collective of Mik, Kelly & Terry Pardoe.

For those who are not in the know, OrKestra was formed by Electric Light Orchestra ex-members Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminski, with Hugh McDowell appearing as special guest.

On first hearing OrKestra's debut album it is quite easy to mistake the songs for ELO tracks. The influence of the ELO sound is very strong, as taken from the "A New World Record/Out Of The Blue" era.

The first European single to lifted from the album is the first track "Fly Away". Strong string arrangement with heavy bass and crafted synths. The title track "Beyond The Dream" is far by most artistically ahead of it's time on the album, with swirling strings, haunting piano, and an unmistakable powerful harmonic vocal from Kelly, this track has the lot! Unfortunately this was the downfall of the track, it just didn't lend itself to being a concert favorite due to it's inconsistant flowing nature, basically it's no rock'n'roller but a epic arrangement - excellent stuff!

Another strong track is "Some Kind Of Magic". Heavy drum beat, quick quirky strings and Kelly's distinct bass. This is one of those tracks where Mik and his violin are brought forward, and it seems to prove the point to the critics that the strings play just as an important roll up front. Take a listen and tell me what you think.

"Don't Give Up", "Don't You Read My Letters", "This Is The Night", "Bring On The Dancing Girls" & "Who's That Calling", are all good rockers with that extra mixture from Kelly's vocal and Mik's excellent playing. The mood changes with a smooch from "Hold On To Love" & "Don't Turn Away", excellent ballards garaunteed to win over any heart. BTW "Who's That Calling" was originally named "Crazy Crazy".

For triva fans, the following tracks "Bring On The Dancing Girls", "Hold On To Love" & "Don't Turn Away" were used on the soundtrack for the teenage romp comedy movie "Summer Job". Plus OrKestra are seen in the movie playing "Some Kind Of Magic" at a poolside party. Did Mik & Kelly really give their consent to appear in this movie? I can only imagine times were hard in those days!

More trivia. The K design for OrKestra is taken from the K off Kelly's solo debut album.

Still more trivia. During the release of "Beyond The Dream", Kelly and Mik played as OrKestra in Germany and then later came on stage again as special guests with ELO Part II, in fact at some gigs OrKestra were billed as ELO, to the annoyance of Jeff Lynne, but more on that below.

The demise of OrKestra came when Jeff Lynne put an injunction on Mik & Kelly for performing ELO's, therefore Jeff Lynne's material, especially since many of the promoters were taking advantage of the ELO connection and billing OrKestra as ELO. The end came very quickly for Mik, Kelly & OrKestra, and a wonderful sound which is reminiscent of the good ol'days, but not before a second album "Roll Over Beethoven" was released in 1993.

"Beyond The Dream" has been a main-stay on my CD exchanger ever since it came into my collection. Each track has something for everyone, but if you put "A New World Record" or "Out Of The Blue" amongst your top ten favorite albums as I do, then this is for you. The whole album is a perfect marriage of rock"n'roll with strings, just as Roy Wood envisaged back in the sixties, when he came up with the idea for an electric "light" orchestra.

This album really does take you BEYOND THE DREAM - happy listening. Stephen Greenwood, October 98
