5.0 out of 5 stars A look at this cool set in video
Customer Video Review     Length:: 0:30 Mins
This is a video of this Summer of Love set. The music is great and the attached booklet has a slice of history. This video just shows me flipping through the set. It has no music or video samples due to copyrighted content.

In my opinion, this set is worth buying just for watching the documentary on the Rock and Roll through the 60s...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hey Man, It's San Francisco
OK, so I really like the AM CD...artists I didn't buy at the time but find I've grown nostalgic about now that I'm, like -- old. But the FM CD? I guess you had to be there. These artists were huge at the time, and some of them have endured. But lucky for them, their success did not hinge on these earlier recordings.

This review is from: Summer Of Love: The Hits of 1967 (Audio CD)
Length:: 0:30 Mins

This is a video of this Summer of Love set. The music is great and the attached booklet has a slice of history. This video just shows me flipping through the set. It has no music or video samples due to copyrighted content.

In my opinion, this set is worth buying just for watching the documentary on the Rock and Roll through the 60s. Watching Jim Morrison's "When the Music's Over" (Doors) and Jimi Hendrix in action is hypnotizing. Also included in the DVD is Janis Joplin's rendering of Ball and Chain and Santana, the Who, Rolling Stones. This documentary really brings home the freedom of expression that was unique to that time in the 60s. 40 years later most of songs are still as popular as ever.

The AM and FM CD each have 20 songs, which played on the airwaves in 1967. The last 3 pages of the attached 40 page book has the discography with the highest billboard chart position for each song.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection, August 21, 2007
This review is from: Summer Of Love: The Hits of 1967 (Audio CD)
This is a great compilation. Even if you have some of the songs already, the versions here are crystal clear sounding. Someone obviously took great care in the remastering. It even has the "original" version of "Brown Eyed Girl", something that you can't even get on Van Morrison CDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly great, February 11, 2008
This review is from: Summer Of Love: The Hits of 1967 (Audio CD)
It's amazing how much great music was being created during that "Summer of Love" in 1967. This 2 CD/1 DVD set is a nice sample of that music, and the DVD is a well-made documentary putting it all in perspective, with many pertinent comments from people who lived through it. The CDs are quite generous with 20 songs on each, but the second half of the second CD is not as good to me, sometimes even substandard. And as is usually the case with these compilations, some big names who had hit songs in 1967 are not on here, people like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, presumably because the producers did not have access to their recordings. I dealt with these shortcomings by re-recording these CDs, deleting 8 tracks, then adding in some missing songs. A good supplementary CD is AM Gold: 1967, plus get some 1967 albums by missing groups or individuals such as those I named above. Or if you'd rather just get a 1-CD version of 1967 hits, try The Classic Sixties Collection: 1967 Cd!. The appearance of this box set is very nice, with great graphics and an interesting booklet giving some background on the songs and performers. Sound quality is very good, too. Play this and create your own Summer of Love!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable "FLASHBACK"!!!!!, August 16, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Summer Of Love: The Hits of 1967 (Audio CD)
This is a great package that is not only for the 'sounds' but also for the 'sights' of that Magical Time...The Summer of Love. Disc One is called "AM" for some of the more comercial 'hits' of that year, while the second disc is called "FM" encompassing some of the 'heavier' cuts to include a few surprise 'obscure cuts like "Mary, Mary" by the Butterfield Blues Band and "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine" by Country Joe & the Fish.

After absorbing the 'SOUNDS'...Kick Back and take in the sights of the DVD and the 'rare' footage' of the day. Although most is a rehash of the TIME/LIFE "History of Rock and Roll", some additional footage make it a worthwhile viewing and well worth the the Price for the Hours of Enjoyable Flashbacks!!!!

This brought back so many memories and my young sons (21 &16) were glued to the DVD and shared it with their friends. Such timeless music from extraordinary musicians! Loved it!

The songs included in this box may not be exactly greatest hits, but are surely very representative of the style and mood of that specific period. Some of them are songs I had been looking for in CD for a couple of decades. And the art work is very nice, with rare photos. Oh, and there is a very cool DVD. If you are interested in the music of the 60's, specially what was going on in San Francisco or in New York at that time, this box is for you.

A nice nostalgic collection of songs from another turbulent time. Too bad they didn't include Country Joe and "1 2 3 What Are We Fighting For" or "California Dreaming."

Conversely, some songs on the CDs like "Reflections" or "Pleasant Valley Sunday" seem out of place.

This is a must have for your 1960's CD collection. There are 55 songs, and obviously, each was chosen very carefully for inclusion with this set. The first song is one of my favorites. It is, 'IF YOU ARE GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO MAKE SURE TO WEAR SOME FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR.' You will not be disappointed with this purchase. I would give it 10 stars!

I was 10 years old in 1967, but I've always been a fan of late 60's and early 70's rock music. This was a time of burgeoning new music and genious musical artists. You'll love this collection of music from the "summer of love."
