4.0 out of 5 stars This compilation is representative of the "Son of Sam" era
I thoroughly enjoyed the music on this album. It is such an accurate representation of the late 70s dance club music. These tunes brought back memories of a crazy time. Each of these songs will be forever etched in the minds of those who heard them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, like the soundtrack
I adore the movie "Summer of Sam" and bought the soundtrack because I had an absolute craving to hear "Baba O'Riley"...my favorite song. And while I love the who's contribution and dancing queen, I'm not really the biggest disco fan, and none of the tracks on this album really made me want to get into it. I've been converted by soundtracks...

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love Disco, get this album, October 7, 1999

Buy the time I was old enough to buy my own albums, Disco was more than dead. It was buried. Although I HATE this 70s revival thing, but it has given me a chance to brush up and buy all my favorite disco songs. S.O.S. sdtk is filled with a bunch of favs and long heard songs !

What's wonderful is that you getting 12"-single length songs. For all of you who own the Marvin Gaye Cd with "Got to Give It Up" on it, knows that a typical Marvin Gaye song never exceeded 3 minutes. Here, it goes on wonderfully for nearly 5 and half minutes.

Some people have insulted this album stating that it was similar to a lot disco sound tracks that have come out in the past 2 years (54, Last Days of Disco, Betc...). However, some of the songs on here I've never heard on any other soundtrack. Songs I used to like but never knew the names too. It makes me want to go dancing and DO the hustle! Unfortunately, I have the soul of a dancer, but the soles of lead foot.

Give this soundtrack a chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars SUMMER OF SAM IS THE JAM!!!, March 29, 2001

This review is from: Summer Of Sam: Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
SOS movie and soundtrack bought back a lot of memories!I was 9 years old when the son of sam was on the loose(which was hor rible)but most of the songs are a treasure! My favorite is the hard to find "There for the grace of god"!I also love "Running away" but hate the edited version."Let no man put asunder,Every body dance,Dancing Queen and La vie en rose" are definetely on my favorite list as well!Although I'm not to familiar with THE WHO, I enjoy "Baba O'Riley"!!I would have prefered "Do you wanna get funky with me"(Peter Brown) instead of "Dance with me"."Fooled around and fell in love" is another unfamiliar but likeable song.I would have also prefer "Boogie Wonderland" (Emotions) over the boring "Best of my love".Even though I like "Don't leave me this way", it is toooooo common!!!You hear this song everywhere all the time so Spike Lee could have put some thing more rare and less commercial as "DLMTW".Otherwise I love this cd and I consider it a disco collection. If you're not a true disco diva like myself, you may not understand and enjoy this cd but I do recommend this cd for those who love disco!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but where's the punk?, May 19, 2003

I got this in the local store thinking there was going to be the song "Hello From The Gutters" which was actually recorded and performed by the actors (!). Unfortunately it wasn't on there and I don't know where to find that song or if it even exists at all on CD. With the exception of the two Who songs (especially "Baba O' Riley") there is not a shred of punk in this album.

But, the disco and pop and such work well here. "There But For The Grace of God" was probably the best song with the best message, and ABBA always works wonders. Chic's "Everybody Dance" is another classic, though I'm convinced they used it in the wrong movie scene. Also of interest are the various soul and diva anthems. Of course you can't go wrong with the Who.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disco and Rock 4ever!, May 16, 2005
This review is from: Summer Of Sam: Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is a fabulous soundtrack. I didn't care all that much for the movie itself though. The song "There But For the Grace of God Go I" was a song I was searching for and I love it! There's no music quite like the disco of the 70's! In my opinion it has staying power! I love to dance to all of the songs on this soundtrack. If you like disco and rock then you'll find this to be a nice collection of hits. All of the hits are fantastic to listen to and to dance to! Add this soundtrack to your gold collection of disco and rock hits!

And while I love the who's contribution and dancing queen, I'm not really the biggest disco fan, and none of the tracks on this album really made me want to get into it. I've been converted by soundtracks before-I didn't really like '60s pop til i got the Rushmore sndtrk-but I don't love any song on the soundtrack. I would suggest buying it used if you like some of the songs. I would also suggest seeing the fabulous movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just because!, March 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Summer Of Sam: Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The mid seventies: I was born. The early nineties: Wished I was a disco queen. The late nineties: Saw "Boogie Nights." LOVED it, especially the dance sequences and the tight disco and dance music. The late nineties: Saw "54." LOVED it, mostly because of the dance sequences and the tight disco and dance music. The late nineties: Saw "Last Days of Disco." LOVED it, ONLY because of the dance sequences and the tight disco and dance music. The late nineties: Saw "Summer of Sam." Much like "Boogie Nights" I watched it repeatedly...until I noticed that these movies ALL had something in common. THE SAME SONGS! The only real standout as far as disco music is concerned on the "Summer of Sam" CD is the cut by Machine...a song I'd never heard or heard OF before I watched the movie. But "Fooled Around and Fell in Love?" (I'm tired of typing quotation marks now) Boogie Nights. Don't Leave Me This Way? 54 (It was even in each movie's trailer!) Best of My Love? Opening sequence of Boogie Nights. Got To Give It Up? Boogie Nights AGAIN. A song that DID appear in SOS actually WAS the Heatwave cut Boogie Nights, which never, ironically, showed up in the Boogie Nights movie...doesn't it seem like the powers that were could have included a song like that on the SOS soundtrack instead of ones we've heard over and over? Like one other reviewer said, if you like the song by Machine this CD is worth the fifteen or so bucks. If not...listen to your Boogie Nights soundtrack. Or...your 54 soundtrack...etc.

I love this CD! Whoever compiled it, managed to put some of my all time favorite 70's dance/Disco tunes on this project! Especially the rare, hard to find...First Choice song, "Let No Man Put Asunder", and Machine's "There But For The Grace of God." Talk about bringing back memories! Other favorites: "Got to Give It Up" - Marvin Gaye (the dance anthem)! Dancing Queen - ABBA (there's just something about it)! Running Away - Roy Ayers (Classic tune)! Everybody Dance - Chic (What can you say..it's Chic)! Fooled Around and Fell in Love - Elvin Bishop (Another great 70's song...) Best of My Love - The Emotions (Great cut produced by EWF)! Dance With Me - Peter Brown (big, big Disco hit), Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston (another of my all time favorite 70's song)!

This CD is a good one..you'll be jamming the entire time..!
Wonderful Disco/70's compilation!
