Sara Jo spends a chaotic summer with her now-recovering alcoholic mother, who abandoned her eight years before.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-- Sara Jo, a fatherless 13 year old with a smart mouth, is dispatched by her guardian, prim and proper Bostonian Aunt Mimi, to spend the summer on Long Island with the mother who abandoned her years before. Her mother has a solid second family now and has made a successful recovery from alcoholism; she is desparate to make amends to the daughter she remembers as little "Sassy Jo." Sara feels that she fits in nowhere, least of all in Joleen's home. She is determined to keep Joleen at arm's length, for the risk of being hurt and disappointed again is too high. Sara Jo explodes with hostility and behaves as unkindly and as irresponsibly as she can. Eventually, getting even yields less and less satisfaction. A loving, mature Joleen; supportive stepfather David; next-door neighbor friend Katie; and gentle, loyal first boyfriend L.T. won't let Sara give up on herself. At last she is able to overcome bitterness and embrace the future with all its possibilities. The story offers believable flesh-and-blood characterizations, and the situations presented are the stuff of life. Treatment of the alcoholism theme is factual and instructive without being preachy or distorting the narrative. Sara uses sarcasm and language meant to shock to mask her pain. This title manages to be "cool" while telling an interesting story and leaving readers with a great deal about which to think. --Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every preadolescent female needs this, March 28, 1999

What a perfect book for teens to understand themselves. A main character that's worried about her weight, has to battle with a snobby best friend, flighty about boys, and doesn't know what's happening to her body. One for all females to read.

It's pitiful that some of the best adolescent books of the 80s are going out of print. Not only is this a timeless tale of growing up with growing pains, love and feelings that over rule teenagers are in tune here.
