Book Description

Avalon Romance August 30, 2005
Megan Marsh was just passing through McCray County, Tennessee on her way to a career in Chicago, but after a run-in with an overzealous deputy involving a bee, a slap, a speeding ticket, and a heap of misunderstanding, she finds herself suddenly immersed in small town life serving a summer sentence.

The man responsible for her community service is the devastatingly handsome sheriff, Daniel McCray. From the moment they meet, something sparkles in each of them.

Unfortunately, Daniel's roots are firmly entrenched in rural McCray County and the last thing he needs is to feel an overwhelming attraction for a city girl who's just passing through. But for some reason, every time they meet the attraction grows.

Much to Megan's surprise, she revels in the joys of small town society, but she can't forget her vow to become an inner city teacher. She wants to teach the underprivileged. However, the more she learns about McCray County and Daniel, the more she believes her future lies there.

Can the rural sheriff and the city socialite learn to accept love even when their dreams keep pushing them apart?

About the Author

Award-winning author Carolynn Carey has had a love affair with the written word for most of her life, so perhaps it was inevitable that she would end up writing romantic fiction. In addition to writing, she loves to read and she also enjoys her career as an academic editor. She and her husband live in Knoxville, Tennessee and their daughter is a teacher of---what else?---English.

A Summer Sentence is Carolyn's first novel for AVALON.

More About the Author

Carolynn Carey was born and raised in a small town in Tennessee, which explains her pleasure in writing books set in a fictional Tennessee town. The quirky and down-to-earth characters in Barbourville face their problems with courage and dignity. A Summer Sentence, Falling for Dallas, and Dealing with Denver are set in Barbourville.

Carolynn also enjoys writing about the Regency period in England. The early 1800s, when the eldest son of King George III was named Regent to rule in his father's stead, are years filled with events in which ordinary people were called upon to face extraordinary challenges. Compromising Situations and Carolynn's novella, "A Tradition of Love," which appears in A Cotillion Country Christmas, are set during that time period.

Carolynn continues to write stories set in Barbourville and during the Regency, so please check back for new selections in the near future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Romance, April 15, 2011
This review is from: A Summer Sentence (Avalon Romance) (Hardcover)
After a blowup with her father, Megan Marsh heads to Chicago to follow her dream. On the way, she passes through McCray County, Tennessee where a misunderstanding leads to performing community service in this quaint town.

Sheriff Daniel McCray can't see living anywhere else. He has hopes of finding a hometown girl and starting a family. He's not ready for the attraction towards Megan. For that matter, neither can she. They come from two different worlds and their goals don't match. A relationship between the two wouldn't work out. Or would it?

The story begins as funny and stays fairly engaging throughout, but parts of the story are hokey, not to mention awkward dialogue in places and a predictable plot. The characters are stereotypical such as the high-strung deputy that resembles Mayberry's Barney Fife, but I enjoyed Megan and Daniel as well as Megan's uncles, Dallas, Dayton, and Denver. Oh, and let's not forget Daniel's Uncle Bob. He was the mastermind behind Megan's community service.

All-in-all, this was a cute story with engaging characters, but it's more likely to fit the 1970 era. People, especially poverty-stricken children simply do not act like that anymore--no matter how rural the town.

Small town life described with authentic flavor, likeable characters, and a good deal of fine humor make this chaste love story suitable for readers of all ages. Easy to read and relatively short, this hardcover book would make a great gift for anyone, but perhaps especially for a young reader who is ready to discover the romance genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading.....good story of relaxed living in rural Tennessee, February 13, 2006
This review is from: A Summer Sentence (Avalon Romance) (Hardcover)
Great descriptive novel of summer time in rural Tennesee. Ms. Carey pictures the true life of a part of America where "everyone know everyone" and where most of the local characters are related. Her humor is perfect. This is a warm love story of two entirely different personalities who compliment each other.
