Book Description

Six short fiction stories which explore the light and dark sides of summer.

Fatal Error by Lynda Wilcox
After a near-fatal car crash, Ann Nesbitt decides to recuperate in Beachcombe, a place she hasn't visited in twenty years. The village has changed in that time, and so has Ann, but as the memories come rushing back, evoked by the looming bulk of Haddon Head, Ann faces a stark choice and the ghost of her past.

Nineteen Seventy-Steve by David Wailing
Steve’s summer is the best! He’s going to remember it forever. But can you remember anything without becoming part of the memory?

A Royal Mess by Rosen Trevithick
Dee Whittaker and her estranged husband Gareth, are destined to become a crime fighting double act.
However, it’s the calm before the storm. With her marriage still holding together, Dee dips her toes into the world of indie publishing. She joins a forum, unaware that the very people she asks for help, will eventually send her life spiralling out of control, landing her in mortal danger.
She asks for feedback on a blurb for her short story, ‘A Royal Mess’, and finds herself flummoxed by the forum members’ responses. Should she really set her comedy about a royal-wedding-themed-best-dressed competition, in Baghdad during 9-11, or are the other writers completely insane?

Holiday from Hell by Cecilia Peartree
Everyone needs a holiday. But there are some who just can’t leave their day job behind when they go away. Explore the devastating effects this can have in a short story by mystery writer Cecilia Peartree.

The Camping Trip by Daphne Coleridge
A camping story: whilst a dog can be man's best friend, friends can become jealous...

Thirstigo by Lou Wellman
A dysfunctional family take a day trip to a remote nature reserve with a dark history. Will a combination of searing heat, marital tension, paranoia and the supernatural be too hot to handle in this black comedy horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a freebie November 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed the book overall. For me the 2nd and last stories were the most enjoyable. Very much like the writing style in the 2nd. The 1st was the weakest for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely, varied collection July 29, 2012
By Ignite
Format:Kindle Edition
I was only familiar with two of these authors before I bought this collection of short stories and on the basis of this, there's not a bad writer amongst them. As you'd expect with a variety of authors, the stories vary in length, style and genre. The final story, Thirstigo, is a classic horror story which I enjoyed very much and though I'm evidently older than David Wailing's Steve, his story certainly jogged the memories. There wasn't a story I didn't enjoy and the whole book took me delightfully through two summer evenings.

I was glad to read A Royal Mess by Rosen Trevithick, as it's a prequel to her new book Pompomberry House which I've just downloaded and hope to read before too long. If this short prequel is anything to go by, I shall enjoy the novel hugely! Even in the sort of summer where my own shorts haven't been excavated from the wardrobe, I think Summer Shorts is a lovely, varied collection of stories for a bit of light summer reading.
