Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10?Elli Wells, 16, is spending the summer at Silver Beach, an exclusive private beach community on Lake Michigan, working at the camp she attended as a child. Sam De Witt, the 18-year-old sailing instructor, asks her to be his partner. While they are platonic friends, Elli's brother Ethan develops an intimate relationship with Charlotte, 16, who has a reputation for loving and leaving 'em. Elli wants to protect her vulnerable sibling and struggles vainly for a way to keep him from being hurt. As the story develops, marital problems between Elli's parents and rumors about Charlotte's mother's death years ago surface; however, these plot elements remain unresolved. Elli cares for Sam deeply, but is not ready for a physical relationship; readers are left wondering why. They will also wonder if Charlotte is capable of love, and if her relationship with Ethan continues. This formula fiction starts off slowly, and the one-dimensional, stock characters are either all good or all bad and very indecisive.?Sandra L. Doggett, Linganore High School, Frederick, MD

5.0 out of 5 stars Silver Beach . . ., April 27, 2002
This review is from: Summer Love (Silver Beach) (Mass Market Paperback)
An exclusive summer resort where families have gathered for generations. A place where nothing ever changes--until the summer Elli Wells turns sixteen.

Elli Chapman Wells,
on the brink of her first great passion, denies her own longings to protect her younger brother from Charlotte Ransom, the girl she knows will break Ethan's heart.

Ethan Chapman Wells,
grown from a frail boy into a gorgeous young man, ignores Elli's warnings and sets his sights on the one thing he's wanted all his life: Charlotte Ransom.

Charlotte Ransom,
fueled by hate and a terrible secret, is jealous of everything Ellis has. And the thing she craves most can never be hers: Sam Dewitt.

Sam Dewitt,
everybody's dream man, could have any girl he chooses at Silver Beach . . . except the one who holds his heart: Elli Wells.

3.0 out of 5 stars summer loving...., June 30, 2005
This review is from: Summer Love (Silver Beach) (Mass Market Paperback)
Elli and Ethan Wells have spent every summer of their lives in the idyllic Silver Beach, and this year is no different. Upon arrival, everythin good about Silver Beach rushes back....along with the bad. Charlotte Ransom has been the Wells' neighbor forever. With her father distant and her mother dead, Charlotte is wild...and sinister. Ethan has loved her forever, but she ignored him, unless she was hurting him. Now all grown up at 15, Ethan finally catches Charlotte's eye. Much to Elli's horror, as she remembers how cruel and dangerous Charlotte can be, Ethan and Charlotte begin a whirlwind, passionate romance. Anxious and worried, expecting Charlotte to break Ethan's heart any day, Elli has trouble of her own in the romance department. Sam Dewiit, a handsome college man, her childhood crush, is shocked at how nicely Elli has grown up....but she is still only 16. As the anniversary of Charlotte's mother's death approaches, old secrets resurface. Will Elli and Sam begin a relationship, or will they just stay friends? Did Charlotte's mother die in an accident...or on purpose? What's going on between Mr. Ransom, and married Mrs. Wells? Will the Wells' grandfather's fragile health hold out? And does Charlotte really care aBOUT Ethan, or will she destroy him?
