Ale Möller, Lena Willemark, and Per Gudmundson are often considered the Trinity of the Swedish new-folk movement, having plied their trade solo and with some of Sweden's most important ensembles through the '80s and '90s. But in this trio they are often at their best. Willemark, she of the infamous, stormy voice, is also an excellent violin player, something often overshadowed in other contexts. Here she gets to stand next to Gudmundson, a fiddler of renown, bagpiper and spirited folk singer. Holding the whole thing together is Möller, the bouzoukispellman, harpist, whistler, singer, and jack-of-all-trades of Sweden's folk pantheon. This is a compilation of two of their previous Sweden-only recordings, Jarven and Frifot. It features a range of dance tunes and ballads, each played with appropriate spirit or dire energy. If the first 30 seconds of "Snettlin" doesn't get you out of that chair and dancing in front of your computer screen, give up on life. --Louis Gibson

5.0 out of 5 stars Swedish neo-folk Trio scores a big hit!, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Summer Song (Audio CD)
I discovered this album while working as an airshifter on a world-beat show here in Champaign, Illinois. The label, NorthSide, is the premiere source of contemporary Scandanavian folk (really neo-folk) music, and this album is one of the best of theirs I've heard to date.

The female lead (forget her name) has an amazing, pure folk voice; the instrumentalists are top-notch, and the entire album is a classy diversity of folk styles, tempos, instrumentation etc. A real pleasure to listen to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, September 13, 2006
This review is from: Summer Song (Audio CD)
I've been on a search for great folk music for about a decade, and I have to say that Frifot is probably my favorite folk group so far. They are the real deal --the energy of the polskas, the rubato rhythms, Willemark's amazingly earthy voice, Moller's brilliant arrangements make for the best non-live music listening experience ever. This cd is probably my least favorite out of all they've done (both as Frifot and as Nordan Project), but it is still exceptionally good. These musicians have a wonderful way of giving simple folk music a very smart context (having studied music theory extensively, I find it full of delightful surprises) while not sacrificing the raw, unfussy quality of good folk music. I highly recommend every cd involving these people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 20, 1999
This review is from: Summer Song (Audio CD)
They were featured on a recent (10/99) review on NPR. Very effective folk group - going back to roots and "modernizing" the tunes.
