without myth, civilizations die, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Summer of Unicorn (Mass Market Paperback)
Within the archetypal themes of quests, immutable rules and the inner quest of each of us for purpose, Hooper weaves a tale of fantasy and philosophy. Hunter is pitted against his half-brother to prove the existence of unicorns, with the winner becoming the ruler of their planet's kingdom. The Keeper of the unicorns is a creature of legends herself. She helps Hunter to realize the importance of delving into myth and the impact it has on both our inner life and our roles in a society.
While this plot may sound very "fluffy," the tale unfolds with characters gaining insights into their own motivations and beliefs. For any readers of the philosophy of Thomas Moore (The Reenchangment of Everyday Life, Care of the Soul), it rings as a parable for personal reflection as much as a wonderful fantasy read.
I know the author planned a sequel. Let us all hope she turns back to her fantasy roots and gives us the fulfillment of the prophecies from Summer.

This book is just magical. I owned it about ten years ago and lost the copy. I looked for a copy and luckily I got one. I would love to read a sequel to this great book! It has all the right ingredients to a truly great love quest. I particularly liked the woman in this book because she is not only beautiful but she is also strong, loyal and courageous. This book has unicorns, dragons, mermaids, etc. It really is quite fascinating. I would also love to see this made into a movie just like Legend.
