Book Description

June 26, 2007
Gincy Gannon isn't exactly an easy fit with the upper crust Vineyard scene. Raised poor and precocious in Nowheresville, New Hampshire, she escaped to Boston after high school. Now a career at PBS fills her days, while her freewheeling sex life keeps her otherwise stimulated. Commitment is definitely not her thing. So why, when Gincy's supposed to be reeling in lifeguards, is she getting hooked on a single dad? Life is good for Danielle Leers. She's got a close-knit family, a killer wardrobe, and a job that keeps her in manicures and massages. As far as Danielle's concerned, pampering is a right, not a privilege. Besides, now that she's set her sights on settling down, her good grooming will attract great husband material. Which should mean a well-heeled Jewish professional. Not a townie who fishes for a living... Blueblood Clare Wellman doesn't worry about keeping up appearances--her boyfriend, Winchester Carrington, Ill, is in charge of that. Actually, he's in charge of pretty much everything...and never lets Clare forget it. Some time on her own is just what Clare needs to get to know herself again. Then Win proposes. An engagement ring shouldn't feel like an albatross--and this summer may be Clare's last chance to see what could be--before what is ties her down for good...

More About the Author

live in Portland, Maine, with my husband Stephen (architect, photographer, and food writer) and our amazingly fabulous cats, Jack, Betty and Cyrus. When I'm not writing, I usually can be found with my head in a book. I try to read widely; still, I do play favorites with authors such as Peter Ackroyd and Patrick McGrath.

I was born and grew up in the Bronx and later lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I earned an undergraduate and graduate degree in English Literature at New York University before going on to work for about twelve years as an editor in publishing and packaging at Ballantine Books, Daniel Weiss Associates, Inc., and Kensington Publishing Corporation. Mostly I developed, acquired and edited projects, usually fiction, in Adult, Young Adult, and Middle Grade categories.

In 1996, I moved to Boston and began freelance editing, ghost writing, and reviewing manuscripts. I was a can-do wordsmith for hire, grinding out books on everything from the importance of shark liver oil in one's diet to feng shui for the amateur; I also worked on what seemed like a million Young Adult series installments. Eventually I decided I'd rather work on my own projects so I made a proposal to my old friend and colleague John Scognamiglio at Kensington. After a couple of false starts he signed me up to write "Living Single," which was published in 2002. Since then I've been writing one novel a year, and I've also contributed novellas to three collections John put together.

In terms of life outside reading and writing, Stephen and I recently updated an 1865 brick townhouse in downtown Portland and we love living in this old seaside town. We entertain a good bit -- Stephen cooks, I set a nice table and clean up afterwards. We're happy to live in an area so full of people who support the arts. Portland itself is alive with theatre and music, and it's the home of several museums, including the impressive Portland Museum of Art, and good independent bookstores catering to serious readers, such as Longfellow Books and Cunningham Used Books.

What's new? I'm working on another book set in Ogunquit, Maine. This story involves two women - Delphine from Ogunquit and Maggie "from away" - who met as children and became fast friends. But after college, well, very different lives beckoned and at the time we meet the women, they haven't seen each other in over twenty years. For a variety of reasons, Maggie is eager for a revival of their old friendship, but for a variety of other reasons, Delphine is not. What happens to these women over the course of the book? I'm finding out more each day!

1.0 out of 5 stars I rolled my eyes about 100 times...., June 12, 2004
This review is from: The Summer Of Us (Mass Market Paperback)
I agree with the reader from Syracuse; I was expecting a light, beachy read but this was terrible, even by those standards. At least most books of this kind keep you interested and make you laugh every now and then. All of the characters in this book were embarrassingly one-dimensional. The dialogue was so unrealistic - where did this author come up with this stuff? This is not how people talk to each other! Equally annoying was the way Chamberlin ends nearly all of the short chapters with some attempt at a deep thought or epiphany for one of the three women. It doesn't work. Truly, I'm amazed I got to the end...I think the only reason I finished it was that I was incredulous that a book this awful got published, and I was stuck on a train with nothing else to read. I cannot believe this book was displayed among MUCH better "beach reads" such as Jennifer Weiner's "Good in Bed" and Jane Green's "Jemima J". Please don't waste your money! I wish I hadn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars fine chick lit tale, July 4, 2004
This review is from: The Summer Of Us (Mass Market Paperback)
Gincy Gannon, Danielle Leers and Clare Wellman share little in common except knowing that their next birthdays mean they turn into thirty year old geezers. Each decides to spend their last youthful summer in the Cape rather than become ancient spinsters in overheated Boston. They turn up late at a room matching session at Oak Bluffs so the threesome by default become summer roommates though they never met before.

Gincy comes from a small New Hampshire town that she left without a look back. Currently she works as a senior editor with Boston PBS. A loner, she has doubts about roommates.

Danielle comes from a wealthy Manhattan family. She knows she is pretty, intelligent and deserves the happiness and love of an upper crust husband that she plans to catch this summer.

Clare is engaged to attorney Winchester Carrington III after a decade together. She has major doubts about becoming Mrs. the third. This summer solace she seeks to find the "vanished" Clare.

Roommates do not necessarily mean friendship. However, a support group bond forms as each of these turning geriatric women search for their inner essence while hoping to find love in the dunes.

Chick lit fans will take pleasure in THE SUMMER OF US due to the strong characterizations. The three lead protagonists, who rotate first person narration, learn over the most wonderful summer of their lives that they have much in common. Each of these slightly flawed but feisty protagonists seeks fulfillment, love and happiness, which leads to a camaraderie. Holly Chamberlin's delightful buddy tale contains depth much deeper than the surface sunburn that the sub-genre often furbishes to readers.

1.0 out of 5 stars disgraceful!, September 16, 2004
This review is from: The Summer Of Us (Mass Market Paperback)
Holly Chamberlaine (author) needs to get another job. She is a very poor author. This book was horrible. Everything about it. The story line, the characters.....especially, Gincy, and the length. It was SO unecesarily long. How many times was she going to try to cash in on the joke about NH. Everytime Gincy referred to her hometown, it was always something like, Armpit, NH. Rodent infested, NH. I mean come on, it was somewhat funny once (NOT) but how many times are you going to try to repeat the same supposed joke? GET A LIFE. Readers, don't waste your precious reading time. I cannot believe this book got published and I wasted $13 on it. Which is the only reason I totured myself to finish it.
