In this poignant memoir, the writer shares his feelings about living and succeeding in NYC from very humble beginnings. While I can empathize with feelings of loneliness and isolation, I don't understand why he chose to move back to Indonesia. He could have still held on to his career and support his family (not just financially). He could have made more of an effort to meet people and new connections, not just in New York. Opportunities will abound for this man wherever he goes, but I thought his decision to leave his career was short-sighted. There will always be challenges to face wherever you choose to live and whatever you choose to do.

Through the semi-fictionalised account of his own journey through life and the city that never sleeps, Iwan Setyawan captures the all-too-familiar ups and downs of New York's transient population. Set against the backdrop of a city he clearly loves, Setyawan paints a striking tableaux of the tension and the loneliness that comes from making a family proud, but being half a world away while doing it. He captures the very essence of New York - both the seductive glamour of 'making it', and the cold and lonely soul that breaks so many hearts. Overall though, this is a story of triumph - professional and personal - and gives us all faith that both can be achieved. This tale is every bit deserving of the acclaim it has received in Indonesia and around the world.
