5.0 out of 5 stars Summit Backyard Safari insect hand vacuums... April 5, 2012
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is NOT specifically addressing the SUMMIT BACKYARD SAFARI BUG VACUUM WITH LASER LIGHT.
There are several models available from SUMMIT that are worthy of comment, but the designs change frequently. I have worked as a professional entomologist for several years and felt that this item could use some alternate observations. I have used many models of these toys as samplers for professional duty sampling.
1. This item is intended to be a toy, and is very "safely" manufactured (no sharp corners, etc.).
2. Comments that the vacuum is too weak probably reflect either (a) manufacturer defect or (b) a misunderstanding of how this style of item is best used.
3. The interchangeable storage removal/design is very clever, durable, and practical. Most are equiped with built-in doors and "watch glass" magnifiers.
4. The motor can be burned out if the vacuum is (incorrectly) used to suck up dirt.
5. Laser-lights, decorative lights, and other acoutrements are not critical to the function of the unit... but I understand that the kids will find that they add to the fun.
6. Larger insects will require the stronger vacuum settings, and more creative sampling methodology. Even a point-blank suction on a medium-large beetle or spider will not dislodge it if the arthropod has its claws attatched to fabric or soft wood; the animal will need to be gently dislodged in order to sample it. A higher vacuum option (beyond the span of these SUMMIT samplers) will always risk damaging small insects (which defeats the purpose of this product).

5.0 out of 5 stars It works for Stink Bugs! January 31, 2011

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I know that this is supposed to be a toy for young children, but I live in an area in which there are many, many Stink Bugs flying around and trying to get into my home. On some days, there are as many as twenty to take outside again. They leave a trail for others to follow and can't be crushed because then they'd leave a smell behind -- hence their name. You can't call an exterminator because experts say that then the Stink Bugs are left lying around dead and attract worse critters to your home. The ones that do manage to get inside now get a quick trip back outdoors via this Summit Backyard Safari Bug Vacuum. This vacuum works if you put the tip of the yellow end flush against the door, wall, floor, or whatever the insect is on, otherwise there isn't enough suction power to lift it into the chamber. (You wouldn't want too much suction, otherwise it could rip the insect apart.) A quick flip of the magnifying glass traps the insect until I can get it out with a quick tap of the vacuum against the deck or ground. Also, note that this "toy" uses a lot of battery power and so the batteries need to be changed frequently. By the way, it's mine now and the kids don't get to play with it anymore -- I'll need to buy them some more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vacuum Way Too Weak! January 23, 2011
Durability: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 2.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Good concept, very poor execution. The motor is too weak to suck up anything other than a small flying insect (think gnat) or a medium-sized dead one. Average household spider trying to run away? Forget about it! There is no way this waste of money could suck it up if it has a grip on anything other than greased marble. For the record, the Backyard Safari wet/dry habitat -- assuming you catch anything to put in it -- is again, a great concept but terrible execution.
