5.0 out of 5 stars Hands on Summit Experience, June 15, 2009
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Traxxas Summit 4WD RTR Electric RC Monster Truck (Toy)
The Summit is NOT a rock crawler or a monster truck. It is a little of BOTH. It climbs rocks rather well, surprisingly well for such a HUGE truck. A little top heavy yes, but still pretty capable for a truck trying to fill two roles. On the monster truck side it does this job well also. If you are looking for speed look at an EMaxx or Savage as the Summit isn't built for speed. But it will bash with the best of them. It is a very GOOD dual purpose R/C truck. It does what the manufacture says it will do and if you apply some common sense and don't try to make it do something it wasn't designed for it will last. I love mine, it is fun to fly around at 20mph and then slam on the brakes, lock the diff from the remote control and start crawling on a pile of rocks. Then once on the other side of the rocks unlock the diffs, shift into high gear and go tooling around at 20 again all from the remote and all from the same Radio Controlled truck. Remember this is a GENERAL PURPOSE TRUCK not a purpose built machine. Is it the best rock crawler and/or monster truck, no. Is it a capable of performing both rock crawling and monster truck bashing, yes it can and rather well too. I would highly recommend this truck for anyone that wants a good RC truck for bashing and crawling. I have had my truck for four months now and broke only one part and that was 100% my fault for not paying attention to one of the tires being wedged under an obstacle, which resulted in a snaped output shaft. Had I been paying attention the truck would not have broken. The motor produces so much torque it is unbelievable. The lights are cool but not a big selling point for me. The wiring is ran VERY well and the likely hood of being cut is unlikely. The servo linkages has not been a problem for me, mine has ran flawlessly since the day I got it out of the box. The locking diffs are a HUGE plus, all monster trucks and rock crawlers should have remote locking diffs. The exo-skeleton body looks fantastic and the cage is extremely durable. Oh the chrome pieces, front bumper and lights on top rack will not stay chrome for long after a couple of roll overs and running into stuff. One last tid bit of information, the truck is HUGE, and I mean it makes an E-Maxx look tiny. It is easily 1/8th scale. The tires are HUGE, the suspension is HUGE, the body is HUGE, and the FUN FACTOR is HUGE!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Love and Hate relationship, December 26, 2009
Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Traxxas Summit 4WD RTR Electric RC Monster Truck (Toy)
Had the Summit for about a month now and its been very...VERY expensive to keep running. I have had no problems with the wiring or electronics of it, i have had a ton of problems with the drive train and suspension. I have had to replace 3 of the 4 drivelines, 2 turnbuckles and part of the front dif. The front and rear bumpers will break right away BUT don't replace them they will still absorb alot of the shock of a head on impact with a tree or leg (ouch). The batteries (4200) dont last more than 15/20 minutes no matter what the ratings say...they dont. The truck is a little to tall to withstand a full on impact head on, it singles out the axles to take alot of damage. All that being said I am very hard on my toy and realize most of the damage is from how i drive it. When its in full running shape its a super fun truck. Its great for bashing and it will go anywhere you want it to go. Be ready to spend a few hundred in upgrades for suspension. If you want a super fast RC the summit is not for you if you want a straight crawler then this is not for you. If you want a good fun truck that can be upgraded to what ever you want this is a great machine. I'm considering getting the Mamba for mine but am worried about the power damage to my transmission. Hope this helps :)

2.0 out of 5 stars compromise is a nasty word in RC., March 22, 2009
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Traxxas Summit 4WD RTR Electric RC Monster Truck (Toy)
Sorry folks, but I have to give the Summit two stars because of what it IS- a compromise. This means that it doesn't do either mission, Monster Truck OR Rock Crawler (which it isn't, anyway, for a myriad of reasons) very well. First, the Monster side:1) Too many bells and whistles. FIVE servos? TEN lights? OVERKILL.2) Along with all those servos are the linkages, which are all prone to failure.3) All those lights require wiring. LOTS of wiring. All prone to being cut or shorted out.4) Folk will inevitably do what the instruction manual says NOT to do, so, so much for manufacturer's suggestions.5) What happened to the brushless system Traxxas talks about putting in the Revo and T-Maxx series of Monster Trucks?Next, the Crawler side:1) Cantilever suspension is NOT the hot ticket for crawling. It can, but not ANYWHERE close to what a dedicated crawler can do.2) Remote locking diffs are a cool feature, but again, we have cantilever suspension, so locked diffs are almost useless here.3) The two-speed transmission is also a cool feature, but again, the two ratios are SOOO far apart, that on-the-fly shifting is weird, and NOT recommended by traxxas, anyway.4) As cool as the Summit looks, it was originally designed as a Monster Truck, then re-hashed into a compromise, rather than Traxxas' designers putting forth a design dedicated to crawling, specifically. So on to what the Summit isn't. A good deal. With as many non-required features as the Summit has, I see this thing being down most of the time, because RC folk are HARD on their equipment, with few maintenance cycles (even cleanings!), so something is bound to go pop. I believe that the Summit will NOT bring more people to Rock Crawling. It may just put people off to RC altogether. Traxxas has made a BIG boo-boo with the Summit. I have been a rabid Traxxas fan since the original T-Maxx, and have eagerly awaited each new model until now. I suppose every manufacturer has it's bad ideas, but this is the worst that Traxxas has EVER produced. Save your bucks for a purpose-built Monster Truck or Rock Crawler, you'll be much happier with it's performance and durability.
