4.0 out of 5 stars Good tool!
After purchasing the ATM Safe for our son, we purchased the Money Jar to keep in the kitchen. It is a good tool to help teach the kids the value of money. Now we designate the money in the jar for something special - say a trip to Chuck E. Cheese's. The kids can watch the savings grow and anticipate what the reward will be for saving. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good learning tool
We bought this for our 8 year old and she loves it! She can easily read the amount and know exactly how much she has. However, there are a few things that we don't like about it:

#1: There is no on/off switch so I feel the batteries will die very quickly and thus lose our balance.

#2: It doesn't accept anything larger than a quarter...

They are also learning delayed gratification and patience as well as the hard lesson that you can't get everything that you want NOW. Not bad!!
The only negative - if you don't force each coin into the slots, they can pop back out and the jar registers a deposit for the coin even though it didn't actually make it in the jar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this bank!!!, November 7, 2005
This review is from: Electronic Money Jar (Toy)
My son is 6 years old and we bought him this bank last Christmas. He loves putting his change in it, then pouring it out and starting over again. He has learned how to count money and to recognize each coin using this. I am even buying one for his 1st grade class at school. His teacher is going to use it in a money center. A great tool to educate and a lot of fun too.

We bought this for our 8 year old and she loves it! She can easily read the amount and know exactly how much she has. However, there are a few things that we don't like about it:

#1: There is no on/off switch so I feel the batteries will die very quickly and thus lose our balance.

#2: It doesn't accept anything larger than a quarter.

#3: If your child inserts a coin into the slot far enough to activate the 'counter' but not far enough to go into the jar it will still add that demonination to the balance (even though the coin never actually went into the jar).

All-in-all, these drawbacks would not keep me from purchasing this item again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful for any age!, November 20, 2005
This review is from: Electronic Money Jar (Toy)
I'm 21 and I love this jar! I always save my spare change for my pets' emergency fund, but I never really knew how much money I had accumulated until I cashed it in. With this jar, it keeps a running total for me so I know how much extra money I have in reserve without going to the bank. I have not had any problems with miscalculations(i.e. adding 30 cents instead of 25), but it occasionally doesn't recognize dimes(meaning that I put a dime in, but it doesn't get added to the total). I think it has to do with the lever on my jar, since the money values are calculated on the size of the coin and sometimes the dimes just aren't large enough to hit the lever and register the coin. Even so, I highly recommend this bank for all ages.

As for battery life, I don't think it's really a major issue because the unit is powered by 2 AA batteries and it doesn't take much power to operate a small LCD screen. Think about your average dollar store digital wristwatch-- it'll run on a button cell for at least a year, 24/7. So even though there's no "off" switch for the bank, I don't think it will be a problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, poorly designed cover, July 11, 2006
This review is from: Electronic Money Jar (Toy)
I purchased 2 money jars for my daughters earlier this year. I thought it was an awesome idea, until the counter quit within a couple weeks. I then had replacements sent, and one of them was defective on delivery. I wish they had worked as it really is awesome and exciting for the kids. It encourages them to save more. Unfortunately, they are no more useful than a $1 piggy bank.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Electronic Money Jar (Toy)
I'm actually surprised at the reviews for this. I love mine. Yes mine. Yes I'm 36 *grin*. Over Christmas I bought 3 types of these machines. An ATM one, a Leapfrog one and this. ATM for the 9 year old, Leapfrog for the 5 year old and the quiet one (this one) for me. I like it best of the three. It isn't loud. It doesn't tell me what a quarter is, I don't have to remember my password and it's fun. It also seems to count my money just fine. It was off by 3 dollars at the bank when I deposited my 102.36...but my kid admitted she'd borrowed 3 so I think it was pretty great all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such a great gadget!, January 31, 2007
This review is from: Electronic Money Jar (Toy)
I bought this for my girls and I love it! It really does properly count the money. The only thing it doesn't count are half dollars (who uses those anyway LOL). The actual product is made out of a hard plastic; seems very durable and the kid's can see their money while it is being counted. I bought this for a lot cheaper from collections etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It, October 12, 2005
This review is from: Electronic Money Jar (Toy)
My 7 year old loves this bank. Not only does it keep a running total of his money, it helped him learn the value of each coin. Once you insert a coin, the LED screen flashes the value of the coin several times. He was struggling with coin values and he picked it up very quick using this bank. His teacher was so impressed she bought one for the class as a math center activity.

My son loves this bank. This way if he is trying to save for a certain thing he knows how much he has without asking me every time.
