Book Description
How strong ARE these people?
That is the question journalist Chris Gould set out to answer when journeying to the US Sumo Open and interviewed real sumo wrestlers.
What he saw and heard took him aback! Far from witnessing mere overweight darts players, he was confronted with German judo champions, Norwegian soccer players, LAPD, Hollywood writers and university lecturers - all vying with a Bulgarian wrestling champion, an ex-pro sumo wrestler, and a Japanese World Amateur champion for gold medals.
Chris then travelled to Japan to compare amateur sumo with the professional version. This book thus lays bare the mystery, ceremony, grace, elegance, and sheer strength of top professional sumo wrestlers, from the closest possible quarters.
As I am a big fan of boxing, wrestling, and MMA I thought this was a very interesting take on sumo wrestling. If you are not familiar with sumo this is a great starting point. The author has a great appreciation and curiosity about sumo, and it really shows.
The photos were unable to load in my Kindle Cloud Reader, so not sure if they were uploaded or formatted correctly.
Chris Gould has done it again - another fascinating, informative Sumo book! This author does a great job of conveying loads of information without be pedantic and boring. Now I wish he would write a biography of Asashoryu as Asa would make a very interesting subject!
Writing has become my quest for understanding. Why does the world work as it does? How does the past help us understand the present? How is genius put together? What kind of knowledge actually enables us to live better lives? Look at my diverse array of work (Batman, Aristotle, Football, Sumo) and you will find a constant focus on tackling these questions. And few people can do it better.
