This is the "Texas" Novas, not "The Crusher" Novas,
By
This review is from: Sump'n Else Tapes (Audio CD)
Just to clarify some on-going confusion regarding The Novas, this is a CD by the Dallas, Texas-based band, recorded during 1965 for the Sump'n Else TV show, with some additional tracks dating to 1968. I know because I was the bass player and I played on all of these recordings.
The confusion stems from another band named The Novas who hail from Minnesota and released "The Crusher" on the Parrot label back in the mid-60s. That novelty song was subsequently covered by other bands in the punk era and beyond. It's a fun song, sung in a fake wrestler voice a la the Cookie Monster or Rob Zombie. It was way ahead of it's time, in my opinion, but it has nothing to do with the Dallas, Texas version of The Novas. Interestinglyt, we still perform together as The Novas in 2006 and we've been asked occasionally to perform "The Crusher" in our live shows, so the confusion continues. Actually, my other bandmates had never heard "The Crusher" until I downloaded it and played it for them at rehearsal last week. - David Dennard, The Novas (Dallas, TX)

the CD is lacking,

this CD lacks one of the better known (in the mid 60's) hit called "the Crusher" these guys had the hit originaly, and did it the best. I would have liked to see that on this CD, in order to give the CD a much higher rating.

Dallas' best band in a great package,
This review is from: Sump'n Else Tapes (Audio CD)
By 1968 the Novas were unquestionably the best band in Dallas, combining superb musicianship (especially Dave Dennard's bass playing) with unearthly harmonies, mixing great originals with tasteful covers of the Beatles, Byrds, Hollies, Yardbirds and more. This record features all six original songs they released as singles ("William Jr."/"And It's Time" should have been a national hit but for a series of bad breaks) plus some live-in-the-studio performances from local mogul Ron Chapman's TV show. If you're a fan of NUGGETS or just love great music, don't miss this.
