I tasted it on my finger: BITTER!

Thinking that maybe it's just me, I let three other people taste it right out of the packet and asked them for their honest opinion.

For me, the flavor of stevia goes well with tea and coffee and is really good in certain home cooked dishes.

I think most other reviewers are really missing the point in this product. It's supposed to taste like stevia. The box says very clearly that it's "a blend of naturally sweet stevia & pure cane sugar". It tastes exactly like that.

I think this sweetener has been getting unfair reviews. This is a stevia sweetener using a whole stevia extract, not just the isolated stevia sweetener reb A. Whole stevia has a slight bitter aftertaste that some people are very sensitive to. The bitter taste is sort of a leafy licorice style aftertaste. Sun Crystals are a mix of whole stevia extract and sugar and it tastes exactly as it should taste. It tastes like stevia and sugar. There are other stevia based low calorie sweeteners that contain highly refined stevia with the bitter components removed such as Truvia, NuStevia, Purevia, ect. Those do not contain whole stevia and so they don't taste like stevia. Comparing this product to those other sweeteners that have the main flavor elements of stevia removed from them is an unfair comparison. It's like comparing highly refined sugar to sugar cane. There is simply no comparison. They are completely different types of products.

This sweetener is for people who like stevia as is and aren't bothered by the bitterness of a natural unprocessed stevia extract. I personally like stevia. I like the raw stevia leaves in my tea. Sun Crystals taste exactly as I expect it to taste. As a true stevia product, this is one of the best you can get. It's more convenient than using stevia leaves, has the flavor of stevia, and sweetens better than raw stevia does because of the addition of the sugar.

I think selecting a sugar alternative is mostly a matter of taste. Personally I find Sun Crystals an absolutely delightful sweetener. I can't stand the pink and blue ones, and the yellow is ok. Sun Crystal's are the best tasting, and they're natural. It's an A+ product for me. Give them a try and if you don't like the taste move on. :)

I was very sorry to hear that sun crystal has been removed from the market. I feel this was one of the best alterntive prducts to real sweetner. I have used this product from the begining and will miss it as I believe there are no comparisons on the market today.

I had been an Equal user for a number of years and after reading the saftety reports, I knew it was time to quit. I'd given up calorie free sodas but the hardest thing for me to give up was tea. I love a cup of afternoon tea-- heck I like morning tea, too. For a while I went back to refined sugar, then tried raw sugar, but in the end I just didn't want all those calories. My sister told me about Truvia but when I read about that turns out it was way over processed and I really didn't want to get into another Equal type sweetener. Then I happened upon Sun Crystals.

I read that it was made from two ingredients. I strive to eat foods whose ingredients are few and ones I can actually pronounce! When I found out that Sun Crystals was only stevia and pure cane sugar, I decided to give it a try. It had a unique flavor that I now know some consider "bitter". Everyday I would have about a third to a half a packet in my tea to get accustomed to the taste. It took about a month of this. Now I have a packet in my tea, no worries. It tastes great to me! I also use it in my oatmeal, grapefruit, and to sweeten plain yogurt with berries.

It's only five calories and I know it's a very safe product. My main advice is give yourself time to get used to the taste. Now Equal would taste like poison to me. Forget Splenda-- I wouldn't be able to touch it. Truvia and the other similar products have been tampered with TOO much and there are chemicals I can't (or won't) pronounce and therefore I can't consume. Give it a try!! At my grocery store, it's only about $2.50 a box. That's a pretty good deal for a safe and tasty sweetener.

I can't believe this great natural alternative to chemicals has been removed from the market. Hey, Sun Crystals, try marketing it better. Try saturating the market with people that truly use, enjoy the product and go out of their way to find it.

I have used this for a couple of months now, and I actually quite like it. I have tried it 1-2 times in coffee and I do not like the flavor it gives to the coffee (so I took away a star).

However, I drink hot teas 1-2 times every day and I love it in my tea! I drink a range of red, green, and white teas. I use half of a packet for one cup of tea and its plenty sweet. I dont notice any aftertaste or unpleasant flavor change. The price here on Amazon, especially doing subscribe & save for about $14-15 for 4 100-packs is a great deal compared to the grocery store.

Sun Crystals are a combination of just two ingredients, real cane sugar (sucrose), and an artificial sweetener made from leaves of the Stevia plant. The exact ratio is apparently a trade secret. As Sun Crystals contains some real sugar, not surprisingly it has a taste very similar to sugar, but with a faintly bitter aftertaste. The product manufactured by McNeil Nutritionals, looks similar to normal granulated sugar crystals.

There are several notable statements on the packaging. These include "Twice as sweet so you only need half as much", and "naturally ½ the calories of sugar". The first statement is subjective, and perhaps not true. The second statement which should be scientifically verifiable appears not to be true, as a teaspoon of Sun Crystals has 20 calories, while regular sugar has 15 calories.

A plus is that Sun Crystals can be used as a replacement for sugar in cooking and baking. According to the manufacturer, the basic conversion formula between Sun Crystals and regular sugar is 1 to 2. This means that one cup of Sun Crystals, is approximately equivalent to two cups of sugar. Lowering sugar consumption and calorie intake is generally beneficial, particularly for diabetics, and following this ratio, both sugar consumption and calorie intake would both be reduced. This assumes that the taste is close to the same.

The bottom line is that it all comes down to taste, which is a very individual thing. When it comes to sugar substitutes, most people have tastes they prefer, whether it be saccharin (Sweet'n Low), aspartame (Equal), stevia (Sun Crystals), sucralose (Splenda), or acesulfame potassium (Sweet One). That being the case, if you have gotten used to your favorite sweetener, you may not find the taste of Sun Crystals to your liking.
