From the Back Cover

Sun Journey A Story of Zuni Pueblo Ann Nolan Clark's sensitive text and Zuni artist Percy Tsisete Sandy's authentic illustrations follow the daily life of a ten-year-old Zuni Indian boy, Ze-do, and his Grandfather Hotima, Sun Priest of Zuni Pueblo. Ze-do has returned from three years at a government boarding school, and he must learn and relearn the ways of his people. In the 21 shapters, the boy--and the reader-learns from his grandfather the important lessons of Zuni life through the seasons--from prayer sticks, planting, and games to dancing, rituals, and Shalako. Suitable for ages 8 and up, Sun Journay is a reissue of a volumn in the Pueblo Series of Indian Life Readers, Publications of the Branch of Education, Bureau of Indian Affiars, United States Department of the Interior. Originally published in 1945 by the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, this delightful and valuable resource will intrigue readers of all ages.

Zuni Calendar "Grandfather! Grandfather! Wait for me. Grandfather. Please." Black night hung low in Zuni. There were no stars. Snow was falling. It was piling thick and white on the sand and the pinon shrubs and the lonesome fields. Coyotes barked near the foot of Sacred Mountain. Their barking broke the night into falling pieces. Their barking shattered the stillness and the blackness.
