The Sun King is a magnificent re-creation of the century of Louis XIV, and of the hunting lodge at Versailles which he transformed into the greatest palace in Europe. Nancy Mitford describes the daily life of the King, the Court and the Government during the years of France's zenith in military power and artistic achievement. She follows the gradual creation of the palace, the complex intrigues of the court and the course of Louis'love affairs, culminating in his secret marriage to Madame de Maintenon. The text is extravagantly illustrated with 111 pictures, including 32 pages in full colour.
