Product Description

The Sun-Mar 200 is a continuous composter with a 6 bushel (50 gallon) capacity. It is excellent for composting kitchen scraps and a few cut up garden trimmings. Compost discharges automatically. No waiting for batches to finish. Pest resistant. Easy to load and turn. Sun-Mar composters go a step further by incorporating the Sun-Mar patented double drum Autoflow design. In the Autoflow design, material goes in the top and compost exits automatically out the end as the drum rotates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Composter IF you know how to use it! May 8, 2010
I actually have the Sun-Mar 400, but it works the exact same way as this one, so I felt the review may be helpful here as well!
****************

The first summer I had this composter (I got in in August) it produced not a lick of compost and I had followed the included instructions precisely. (And even called SunMar customer support, though they seemed to not understand what the problem was and recommended water and turning it more, which didn't solve the problem.)

The problem is that the English instructions are very misleading and do not describe how the composter actually works, or how best to care for it in order to maxamize compost production.

On a blog I learned a bit more about how the composter is supposed to work.

Misconceptions:
----------------------
From the promo material online and in the directions I thought that when items were deposited into the inner drum they should be compost (at least that's what the pictures and graphics seemed to depict). So when I would peek in the inner drum and see dried up leaves and other items that were very much NOT composted, I'd toss them back in the drum and the cycle repeated itself. For MONTHS. From August until it froze solid in January I had not produced a single tablespoon of finished compost, though it was obvious that things were breaking down in the outer drum.

The problem was that the items that ended up in the inner drum were not compost at all, but only partially rotted, but still identifiable, bits of things from the outer drum.

I was very disappointed, but it had been so long at that point there was no way to return the product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Construction Except one Major Item June 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the fact that this is a low profile compost bin. I wanted a rotating bin and it's just the height of our air conditioner. So they are both in a spot where landscaping can mask them. The barrel is very solid as are the supports. However, in my first 6 months of use, I'm finding one issue. As the bin fills up with the '50' gallons of food scraps and water, it becomes very heavy. The sliding door covering the opening is very poorly designed. The basis of the bin is to rotate frequently; however, the door keeps popping off as the weight of the contents hits it as it is rotating around. I have to hold the door on so I can't make a complete revolution. I'm surprised the other reviewers didn't mention this.

I'm still holding out hope that this will produce compost as I also have yet to see any, but I'll blame that on me being a composting rookie. I suppose I'll just have to rig up a strap to hold the thing on.

1.0 out of 5 stars consider carefully July 17, 2011
By C. Wing
I purchased this product a few years ago with great hopes and much treasure. My experience was the unit didn't breathe well and instead of composting, product simply rotted inside. It is hard to remove compost from the unit, despite the center tube. Finally, after a couple of years of disappointment, the stand bowed and wouldn't hold the rotating composter.

1.0 out of 5 stars doesn't even deserve one star; WORST composter ever March 29, 2013
I've been composting for 35 years and have had several closed commercial composters, adding them all the time as my output increases. My favorite brand is discontinued so I thought I'd try this one. Not only does it NOT compost after a full year of use, but it attracts flies to the point that I can no longer even see when I get near it. I will have to wear goggles and a mask to keep the gnats and flies out of my eyes and my mouth just so I can empty it to another bin and dispose of it. (It will have to be hauled to a dump I'm afraid unless I can come up with some way to use it for another purpose.) I read the reviewer who said that it works when it's used "properly," but this is total nonsense. A good composter does not require expensive peat moss added to the mix (which is not even available in my area for any sort of reasonable price) nor does a good composter ever instruct you to leave the lid open. My heavens, the designer of this mess has never lived in a rural area! You cannot leave the lid open on a composter and not have critters help themselves to it (snakes, raccoons, opossums, rats, etc.) the very first time you do so -- even if you build a fence around the thing. No... a GOOD composter needs only green (nitrogen) and brown (carbon), wet and dry, and a good turning once a day. This one is so poorly designed compared to others on the market that it does not deserve even a single star. Do not waste your money on it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not work as advertised March 5, 2013
By LMG
I used this unit for two years as the instructions specified and never got anything close to completely composted material out of the the exit port. It was always a mix of compost and raw waste. After a year it started to lean because the stand couldn't support the weight. In the end it just collapsed. I called the company, but the warranty period had already passed, and they would not give me a refund. The lid fits poorly, I scraped my knuckles more than once trying to move it. This unit is considerably more expensive than most, and I've since found much simpler and cheaper tumblers to work far better.
