It was with a little bit of trepidation that I went ahead and bought this Nuvinci Wheel, seeing as how we were installing it on our new tandem, and they are not recommended for that purpose! Our tandem already had an entirely serviceable set of 24 speed derailleur gears! We went ahead and very quickly received our wheel/hub! The packaging could not have been better, and the instructions were comprehensive. After fitting, and figuring out a chain tensioner (don't expect too be able to use an Shimano Alfine unit as they do not have enough lateral adjustment to line up with the chain on a Nuvinci! A Singleator type unit would fit!) And and after making up the Looong cables required for a tandem, I gingerly took it for a ride! It is like nothing I have ever experienced in bicycle gearing, so smooth that you really cant tell its working except for the change in cadence, and effort. Through the city traffic and wherever there can be confusion about which gear you should be in, is where the Nuvinci shines, also up those shallow but steepening hills where it is difficult to be in exactly the right gear! Apart from those hills where a really low "granny" gear is whats needed there in nothing like a Nuvinci! I would buy another two if I could, One for my touring bike and one for my wife's Commuter Bike! When really putting in the effort on the tandem, the Nuvinci feels a little odd and slightly spongy, but we are going to put the captains and the stokers cranks out of phase by 90 degress, as recommended on a Nuvinci Blog, and that should fix that! We are both really happy with our purchase, If only this wheel was available in 700c!
