Electronic-infused indie pop that rocks,
By J.R. "Joey" (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sun & Scream (MP3 Download)
Beehive's Sun & Screen is electronic music at its best, infused with the best elements of folk rock.Zach Hinkle, better known for his acoustic solo work, has given us an electronic album for those who distrust electronic music. (I include myself in that group). There is nothing here that is too impersonal, too slick, or too "prefab". Instead, Hinkle takes a complex, rough, low-fi vibe and lays it on top of what are essentially simple, swoon-inducing pop tunes. You can sing along, but you can also get lost in the textures and layers. The melodies are particularly pure, but the songs underneath are also intricately built (as opposed to just strummed or programmed). A special pleasure here are Hinkle's vocal textures--they ring true over the purposefully busy backing tracks, delightfully mature and warm. A personal favorite is the song 'Wink'--the album's most personal, and it's centerpiece of introspection and exploration. This is great stuff: more personal, more interesting and more enjoyable to hear than most of what's out there. |
