Editorial Reviews

John Coltrane's Sun Ship was one of the last-and finest-chapters in the story of his classic quartet. The album profiles the saxophonist in transition, from the secular (with standards like 'Dearly Beloved') to the sacred (with compositions like 'Amen'). Deepening his spiritual journey, Trane discovers the sound-the urgent cry-that marks his mystique and assures his immortality. But it was released four years after Coltrane's death, in 1971, culled from session tapes by Coltrane's wife Alice.

The new release Sun Ship: The Complete Session 2-CD set is the result of an extraordinary discovery: the entire session as it was recorded on August 26, 1965, with Trane, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones, with producer Bob Thiele. Newly mixed and remastered in high-resolution audio, this special release includes all alternate takes, conversation between the musicians, their leader and their producer, and more than one hour of unreleased music.

The 16-page booklet features an essay by renowned Coltrane scholar David Wild and rare photos by Chuck Stewart, who shot the original album cover.
Sun Ship: The Complete Session is a rare, essential snapshot of an icon at work - the evolution of a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent document April 28, 2013
By A.Y.H.
Format:MP3 Music
I have to disagree with the reviewer below who complains of the listening value of this set and Jimmy Garrison's "meandering" solos. If you find Garrison's bass playing as compelling as I do, you'll be moved by his three tries at his own untitled composition (given the provisional title "Ascent" by Coltrane). As Ed Michel found in 1971, the first take is the best, but there is an almost equally strong take to be assembled out of Garrison's second full bass introduction and Coltrane's final solo.

The alternate take of "Dearly Beloved" is arguably a more lyrical performance than the released version, though less forceful. Finally, the false starts are fairly few, reveal interesting details of the finished arrangements, and give us the opportunity to hear this group in a relaxed mood and at their creative, collaborative peak.

5.0 out of 5 stars A full session of Trane's Classic Quartet April 18, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sun Ship is one of Coltrane's most underrated albums. I've loved this music since I bought the LP back in the 1970s, and now we get to hear all the surviving studio tapes, including the band working things out and sometimes joking around between takes. If you have a particularly serious aversion to false starts (not that many, really, as such things go) and studio chatter, then this might not be for you, but I think this two-disc set is essential for any Trane fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great archive, but not a great album April 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A warts and all look at the recording process, though the warts aren't particularly ugly or troubling. This is not Coltrane's Sun Ship album, it's the Sun Ship session, and the music contained on these two discs was later edited by Alice Coltrane into an coherent whole that is, while not one of Trane's best recordings, an important transitional work. You may love Sun Ship, but you may not love hearing how it was made.

The issue here is similar to the Complete In a Silent Way Sessions, where you can hear the parts that were assembled into the whole, and the parts are generally inferior to the whole. The advantage of having a brilliant editor like Teo Macero is he can select the strongest music and shape the album. The parts on the Sun Ship Sessions are definitely inferior to the whole, and the listening experience is also inferior. Rather than tack on alternate takes after the complete album, listening means working your way through false starts and incomplete takes and, on the second disc, a lot of meandering, aimless bass soloing from Jimmy Garrison. It is fascinating to hear the musicians make this music, but the reward is musicological rather than aesthetic.
