4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Competent Occult Metal From Texas.....
NOTE: I would give this album four and a half stars if I could.

This is a great album of black thrash from occult masters Absu. Please note, this is NOT black metal. It is thrash/black thrash/blackened thrash whatever, but it is NOT black metal. The band say they play Occult Metal, whatever that means.

Anyways, as I said this is a great release, the song structures...

3.0 out of 5 stars ABSU - Black/Thrash!
Well, this CD Isn't bad at all, there's some pretty good tracks on here, but If you want some killer black/thrash, check out BLOOD STORM! Their aLOT better in my opinion. Get their CD entitled: Death By The STorm Wizard. The Guitarist/Vocalist Mezzadurus use to play live gigs with Absu! Overall, Absu's Sun OF Tiphareth doesn't totally dissapoint. Great US BM!

Anyways, as I said this is a great release, the song structures are SUPERB, the riffs are dope as hell, the vocals are a high-end and scratchy blackish rasp. Thick guitars, light peppering of keys and female vox here and there to add good effects. No cheeziness, mind you: just rocking, solid, driving heavy metal with innovative direction and focus. Lyrics are REPLETE with Sumerian/Celtic references (and probably many other pantheons of various pagan religions). All instruments are played proficiently. A real headbanger.

It must be noted that this album took me a WHILE to get used to. At first I thought it was boring and went nowhere. After repeated listens it started to sink in and soon I realized that I had a great piece of music on my hands which got me going every time. I have heard similar accounts of experiencing this album. It's one of those that requires patience and repeated listening. So if you don't have the patience for that sort of thing (like a friend of mine who listened to it a couple of times and thought it was [bad] and left it at that) then maybe it's not for you. But you'd be missing out.

Not the most essential CD in the world. But if you can spare the cash* it is a definitely a solid disc of real METAL you can bang your ...head to until Sumeria rises again to boil us all in the raging sea of chaos that is the ABSU!!

*Underground metal imports are not expensive because underground metal imports do not really exist. Take that to mean what you will.
