5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Photography Starts Here, May 19, 2008
At this price, you can't be without this lovely book. Every conceit of modern photography-except for color and stop-motion- is to be found in the pioneering work with a negative/positive process.
Retouching-which we can now see as merely a kind of image editing was almost suggested by the paper negative. This book is remarkable and eye-opening.

Lynn Hoffman, author of the novel bang BANG

5.0 out of 5 stars The Roots of Modern Photography, May 19, 2008
Modern photography begins with the paper negative calotype process of Hill and Adamson. Color aside, all the conventions and potential manipulations of the medium were already present in the calotype.
Of course, the ability to stop motion was outside the range of this slow process, but it's impossible to look at these remarkable pictures without seeing how they changed everything.
